Jan Juc appearance for surf rowers Wednesday, 01 February 2012 00:00
Riding high: Virginia Pope, Anna Archie, Olivier Haig and Annie Belcher bust through a wave in the A grade final.
A case of appendicitis caused the Port Campbell Surf Life Saving Club to miss out on competing in the final round of the Victorian 2011-12 Navy Australian Surf Rowers League Series last weekend.
One of the crew members became ill on the Friday night and ended up having her appendix removed on the Sunday.
Her father who was caring for her could also not compete.
However, the team managed to organise another sweep in time to still compete in Sunday’s carnival in Jan Juc.
Coach and sweep Shane Maslin said the open women’s team came in fourth at the finals and the reserve grade men’s placed fourth in the semi-finals.
“It was challenging surf so the crews did well,” Mr Maslin said.
This Saturday the crews will compete in the Masters Surfboat Carnival in Lorne as well as the plate racing for open men’s and women’s teams.
“Our reserve crew has made the open finals a few times so we usually do pretty well,” Mr Maslin said.
The Masters will begin 9am.
