From this weekend, members and visitors to the Thornton Street club can now play on a brand new carpet green.

According to the club’s vice-president, Harry Van Someren, the laying of the new $200,000 green was expected to be completed this afternoon (Friday), with the first bowl to be rolled soon after.

“The beauty of a carpet green is that it can be played on the minute the installation is complete,” Van Someren said.

“We’re all absolutely thrilled to see this new green come to fruition; it’s been a long time coming.

“Our second green is a sandfill one which takes quite a bit of maintenance and like many clubs it can be difficult to get volunteers to ensure its upkeep – and we’re not getting any younger.”

Van Someren said the new carpet green would require very little maintenance and would no doubt become a popular drawcard for the club.

“We are very grateful for the council’s assistance in securing a $150,000 state government sports grant and they (council) also matched us dollar for dollar for the remaining amount needed which was wonderful.”

With fine weather predicted for today (Friday), work was anticipated to be completed later this afternoon – giving members the opportunity to play on the new surface this weekend.

“We can’t wait to see the first bowl roll down the new green,” Van Someren said.
