Auction to support the future of training
A GOODS and services auction will be held this Friday evening in a bid to support the next generation of Terang’s harness racing superstars.
The Terang Harness Racing Owners, Trainers and Supporters Group have launched the auction in hopes of raising funds for a new training centre which can be used to support young and upcoming trainers.
The goods and services auction will be held this Friday, April 17 from 7.30pm at the Terang Harness Racing function room at Dalvui Raceway.
Terang Harness Owners, Trainers and Supporters Group president Harry Craven said a wide range of items had been donated thanks to the generous support of local businesses.
“We’d love to get a training centre up and running at the Terang course because we’ve got a couple of young ones in their early 20s who are looking for somewhere to train,” he said.
“If we can get something going we’ve got a chance to support them coming along to the track and training horses there.
“We’re running a goods and services night to try and raise some funds which will allow us to build some infrastructure.
“There is a range of items from farming equipment to accommodation vouchers and plenty of horse products – there’s something for everyone.”
Mr Craven said the funds raised would support the initial steps towards developing the training centre, which he felt was vital to ensure there was a bright future for budding talent.
“It would be such a great asset to help the young ones into the sport who perhaps don’t have family involvement,” he said.
“It gives them somewhere new to participate in the sport.
“Anyone from the area such as those living in Terang, Camperdown or Cobden could hire it out, have a few boxes and train a horse if they would like to do it.
“For anyone who doesn’t have somewhere they can train, they could come along to Terang and have a go at training and racing their own horse.”
Mr Craven said Terang and surrounds have long produced an exceptional quality of talent, far beyond what would typically be expected of such a small population area.
“Harness racing is a real family sport,” he said.
“There’s a young girl at the moment who won a race a few months ago and there was about 40 people there that were involved in the horse with her.
“There’s a real community behind harness racing – a real group effort goes into racing a horse, so I think the family-oriented nature is a big reason why it’s been so big around here.
“But that’s part of why we want the training centre – so even people who don’t have that connection to the sport can also have an avenue to get involved.”
Mr Craven said he hoped to see plenty of people in attendance on the night, digging deep to support the cause.
“Come along on the night or reach out,” he said.
