Awards for local sporting heroes

CAMPERDOWN Olympian Penny Smith helped recognise some of the district’s sporting heroes at the 2024 Sport and Volunteer Awards Ceremony.

Member for Wannon Dan Tehan recently hosted the awards which saw 29 recipients recognised across Wannon.

The awards celebrated Wannon athletes, coaches and sporting clubs for their outstanding commitment or achievements in sport.

“The Wannon Sport Awards are an important opportunity not only for me, but also for the community, to recognise and celebrate the achievements of our sporting community and the contribution sport makes to Wannon,” Tehan said.

He said he was inspired to read about the individuals and groups whose hard work was having such a positive impact on our communities.

“There dedication is truly commendable,” Tehan said.

Stevie Godber of Curdievale received an individual achievement award (secondary school).

Stevie was recognised for her success in athletics as a dedicated member of South West Sports Academy Apex Program and Athletics South West.

Toby Godber, also of Curdievale, received the same award.

Toby is currently ranked number one in Victoria and number four in Australia in his age division for archery.

He has excelled in both indoor and outdoor target shooting, as well as field shooting.

Timboon’s Arthur Finch received an individual achievement award in the open division.

He was recognised as a valued member and champion of both the Timboon Bowling Club and the Timboon Lawn Bowling Club.

Thomas Roberts of Glenfyne (individual achievement award/open category) was commended on his success in water-skiing.

He was one of four members of the Australian Barefoot Waterski Elite under 23 team selected to represent Australia at the World Barefoot Waterski Championships in Florida recently.

In the team achievement (open) categtory, Neal Simmonds of Cobden was congratulated on his dedication to promoting physical health and mental wellbeing among students at Cobden Technical School.

Through the Active Schools Program, he fosters inclusivity, motivating all students to participate, regardless of ability.
