Birthday fun for young learners
STUDENTS at St Patrick’s Primary School marked a learning milestone last Thursday with a special day of celebration and dressing up.
Foundation students came to school dressed as animals to celebrate Milo Monkey’s birthday as well as their developing literacy skills.
Milo Monkey is part of the Little Learners Love Literacy program, which teaches students reading and writing through a systemic synthetic phonics approach.
St Patrick’s Primary School teacher Paula Atkins said the students had met all 26 animals, which each correspond to a letter of the alphabet and help to teach letter-sound relationships.
“These animal friends got together for a party to celebrate the Foundation students’ achievements and we are incredibly proud that our students have now met Milo and all 25 of his friends, meaning they have been introduced to all letters of the alphabet – an important milestone in their literacy journey,” she said.
“The Little Learners Love Literacy program engages students through phonics, fun and explicit teaching of verbal and written letters and sounds.

“Students learn not only to recognise the letter visually, but to hear it, speak it, write it, name it and understand its relationship to other letters.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate student learning, build excitement around literacy, and acknowledge the great progress being made by all Foundation students.”
Students visited Camperdown’s Baranbali Kindergarten, where they introduced their characters to the children and read a book to them.
Both the Foundation students and the children at the kindergarten also shared in some fun in the playground before the students returned to school and enjoyed cake and a parade.
