The Bombers capped off a recent purple patch of form with a comfortable victory over the Roosters following two gallant performances against Port Fairy and Hamilton Kangaroos.
The 12.10 (82) to 7.7 (49) triumph was the club’s second in what has been a tough 2019, with Courtney revealing the victory was the reward of several weeks of hard work on and off the track.
He said the win over a top five side would give his playing group plenty of “confidence and belief they can match it with best sides” moving forward.
“It was a really good reward for the boys, they’ve been putting in an extra night’s training and doing more recovery each week so they’ve really earned the win,” Courtney said.
“Obviously South had our measure by 50 points earlier in the year and have been in the top five most of the season but for us to play the type of footy we did for four quarters was really good.
“Over the last two weeks we’ve played fourth and sixth in Hamilton and Port Fairy and have played really well so it was important that we got that victory instead of having those honourable losses all the time.
“We have some games coming up against some sides around us on the ladder and some sides that are higher than us but we’ll be looking to carry this momentum now for the rest of the year.”
The Bombers controlled the contest from the outset but failed to be further in front at quarter time but eventually surged clear in the second and third quarters.
They extended what was a seven point lead at the first break into a 39 point advantage at the last change, before the Roosters won the fourth quarter to reduce the margin to 33 points at the final siren.
Courtney said it was “easily our best performance this year”.
“It was only a goal in it at quarter time but we had 75 per cent of the play and probably should have capitalised a bit more,” he said.
“But during the second and third quarters we really took control of the scoreboard and in the last I think they kicked three goals in the last 10 minutes to add respectability to the scoreboard.
“Halfway through the last quarter we were 50 points up so it was definitely our most even performance and it was a very good four quarter effort.”
Cobden’s victory now has them well placed for their road trip to Portland this weekend, with the Bombers heading into that match searching for a third triumph.
However, Courtney remained realistic about his side’s situation and said the Bombers cannot expect another win to come easily off the back of their effort against South Warrnambool.
“We don’t want to get carried away too much with it because in the end it is only one win,” he said.
“We can’t afford to take Portland too lightly even though they are down the bottom end of the ladder alongside us because our inconsistency has been there (most of the season) and we have to become a more consistent team.
“We know Portland play a lot better at home, so we have got to make sure we are switched on.”
