NICK Castersen has won a bronze medal at the state athletics championships.

The 18 year-old Terang College student finished third in the 18-20 year discuss event at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park, last Monday.

Nick qualified for the state championships after taking gold at the Greater Western Region Athletics competition, held in Ballarat, the week prior.

This followed on from victories at the school house athletics, district and then regional levels.

Nick claimed bronze on Monday with a personal best throw of 33.52 metres – clearing his previous PB by 1.5 metres.

“I was really surprised to do so well to be honest,” Nick said.

“There were a couple of much bigger blokes than me so I was certainly happy to finish top three; standing on the podium was a bit weird.

“And quite a few of them train regularly and are probably members of athletics clubs, for me it’s just a bit of fun at school so I’m thrilled with the result.”
