Bulls continue strong form
POMBORNEIT’S division one side continued its good form with a six-wicket win at Ecklin on Saturday.

Ecklin won the toss and elected to bat.
A below par performance in the field from the Bulls saw the home team put together a couple of strong partnerships before ultimately being bowled out for 247 in the 49th over.
Leg-spin duo Lahiru Fernando with 3/30 from 7.3 overs and Josh Reynolds with 2/15 from five overs were the best of the Pomborneit bowlers.
Tom Darcy and Clinton Place took two wickets each.
Some good early batting between skipper Matt Bignell and former skipper Grant Place saw the Bulls race to 1/131 from 19 overs before Bignell was dismissed for 66 from 71 balls.
Grant Place went on to make 79 from 63 balls as Pomborneit eased to victory in the 37th over for the loss of four wickets.
Sam Darcy continued his recent good form with the bat with a run a ball unbeaten 45, Lahiru Fernando at the crease with him when the Ecklin total was passed on 25.
It was a short day at MCP Oval when the division two Bulls had a nine-wicket win over Boorcan.
The visitors batted first and were dismissed for 56.
Opening bowlers Gavin Reynolds with 3/5 and Simon Day with 2/15 were impressive in their respective six over spells.
Junior player Max Rees continued his strong division two season with 3/10 from five overs and Boorcan was all out in the 29th over.
Ben Whytcross led the way with the bat with an unbeaten 33 as the Bulls passed Boorcan’s score in the 10th over to record a much-needed win.
The division three Bulls played out a thriller against Ecklin at Waldig Oval.
Batting first Pomborneit posted 6/237 from its 40 overs on the fast South Purrumbete ground.
Veteran opener Tony Evans made his sixth century for Pomborneit and seventh of his career with 116 from 119 balls.
His opening partner Garry Riches made 28, with skipper Aaron Van Es hitting an unbeaten 21 from 10 balls to finish the innings.
Ecklin was flying as its openers put on 157 for the first wicket before Tony Evans broke through.
Regular wickets then continued to fall as the run chase got tighter.
Needing four runs to win with a single wicket in hand, Ecklin could only get a leg bye before losing its final wicket on the fifth ball of the final over.
Tony Evans made it an all-round day out with 3/14 from 3.5 overs while Jack Darcy, Aaron Van Es and Dean Tevelein took two wickets each.
A good crowd was on hand at MCP Oval on Sunday to see the rematch of last season’s women’s grand final between Pomborneit Gold and Bookaar.
A strong bowling effort from the Gold women saw the visitors bowled out for 89 in the 20th over.
Nellie Sadler bowled with good pace and control to take 3/7 from four overs, Sam Coxon took 2/8 from 3.4 overs, Jess Moulden 2/16 from four overs andTayla Reynolds 1/15 from three.
Openers Tayla Reynolds and Sam Coxon put on 25 for the first wicket before Reynolds was run out.
Skipper Coxon went on to make her fifth score of 30 retired for the season, while Jess Moulden smashed 29 from 18 balls as the Gold team ultimately passed Bookaar’s score in the 16th over, going on to make 5/121 from their 20 overs.
The Pomborneit Maroon women put up a competitive effort against Colac at CMTP Oval, going down by 24 runs.
The home team batted first and made 3/132.
A 30 retired from captain Janelle Whitehead got the Maroon team off to a strong start but they couldn't quite keep up with the run rate, finishing at 2/108 from their 20 overs.
Other contributions came from Lily Van Es who made 19 not out and Tiffany Hay with 15.
In junior cricket, the Pomborneit Gold girls had a five-run loss to Bookaar at MCP Oval.
Isla Nolan with 35 not out and Jada Mahony with 22 top scored for the Gold girls in their 8/116.
Chloe Bridges, with 1/5, was the best of the Pomborneit bowlers in Bookaar’s 121.
Pomborneit’s under 17 boys had a 146 run win over Apollo Bay at MCP Oval on Tuesday night.
Levi Cootesmith and Fletcher Tolland, with two wickets each, were the best of the junior Bulls bowlers in Apollo Bay’s 8/87.
Co-captain Ben Whytcross made his third half century of the under 17 season with 50 retired from 30 balls, Gavin Reynolds hit 38 from 17 balls and George Sadler made 36 retired from 30 balls.
Max Rees also made the 30 ball retirement mark (with 14 runs) while Jonty Raven made 23 from 21 balls, Dermot Conheady retired on 15 and Patrick Spokes finishing on 15 not out as Pomborneit racked up 6/233.
Pomborneit’s under 16 boys have finished their season in third place after a 14 run loss at Cobden.
Captain Fletcher Tolland bowled beautifully to take 4/8 from six overs, with a wicket each to Patrick Spokes and Josh Reynolds in the home team's 6/117.
George Sadler made 34 and Josh Reynolds made 30 in the Bulls reply but it wasn’t enough as the team was all out for 103.
Pomborneit’s under 14 boys had a big win over West Warrion at MCP Oval last Friday.
Alex Huggins top scored with 23 retired from 24 balls, with other good scores coming from Miller Murphy (20 retired), Bailey Fox (19 retired), Hugo Saarikallio (18 retired), Noah Boyd (18), Ollie Rahles-Rahbula (16 retired), Charlotte Richardson (15 not out), Mason Narik (15 not out) and Sam Tolland (14 retired) in Pomborneit’s 2/218.
Earlier West Warrion was dismissed for 42; Charlotte Richardson with 2/5 from three overs leading the wicket takers.
The Pomborneit under 13 boys were well beaten by top team Cobden at Waldig Oval.
Pomborneit’s under 13 girls had a 21 run win over Irrewarra at CSC Oval on Sunday.
Emily Reynolds with 15 and Zoe Unwin with 10 top scored in Pomborneit’s 4/127.
Zoe Unwin with 3/12, Scarlett Whitehead with 2/7 and Scarlett Saarikallio with 2/9 led the way with the ball as Irrewarra made 10/106 in reply.
