Bumble bees swarm Run for Kids
DONNING bright yellow tops and tutus, Lakes and Craters runners (and some friends) took part in this year’s ‘Run for the Kids’ in Melbourne.

The group, which was quick to earn the nickname ‘The Bumble Bees’ by onlookers, joined thousands of others from all over the state to promote awareness and raise funds for The Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.
With a start line at Docklands, the March 29 event once again saw the large crowd make its way over the Bolte Bridge and through the Domain Tunnel.
Participants could enjoy both a 14.4km long course or a shorter, 4.7km course.
“We had eight runners on the day, six from Camperdown and two from out of town,” group member Gary O’Neil said.
“It was a wonderful day and it was amazing to be able to participate for such a great cause.
“There were families running for sick children undergoing treatment, families running in memory of a lost child and families who have had children attend the Royal Children’s – along with runners who just wanted to contribute to the cause.”
Several from Camperdown have been participating for a number of years but the last few years has seen them run for an extra special reason.
“A member of our group has a daughter, Goldie, who attends the Children’s regularly and will be doing so for a while,” Gary said.
“The last couple of years we have ran with her parents, and Goldie in her wheelchair; which is the best feeling not only for us but for the three of them.”
Unfortunately, Goldie wasn’t well enough to join the group this year but, prompted by an idea from her mum, the group wore gold tutus to match their tops.
“Our bright yellow outfits ensured Goldie was with us every step of the way,” Gary said.
“It was an absolutely great day and hopefully we can get more runners to participate next year – and we can become a swarm of bumble bees.”
