Cats skipper eying finals berth
REAPPOINTED Mortlake skipper Todd Robertson has finals firmly on his agenda once South West Cricket’s season gets underway.

REAPPOINTED Mortlake skipper Todd Robertson has finals firmly on his agenda once South West Cricket’s season gets underway.
The Cats have locked the bowler in for another season after he led the club to the grand final last season.
Utlimately they were defeated by Pomborneit, but Robertson said his club found plenty of positives in the season as a whole.
The likes of Isaac Wareham and Jack Lehmann enjoyed strong campaigns, with the second year skipper hoping another of his young charges can replicate his team-mates efforts this year.
“As a pretty successful club we want to be challenging for the finals every season so obviously finals will be our first goal,” Robertson said.
“We also want to develop a few more of younger players.
“This guy isn’t much different in age to Isaac and Jack but Will Kain is one that could sneak under a few radars and take the next step this season, but other than that we’ll be much the same.
“Jack and Isaac were both team of the year and had good seasons, so it’ll also be a little bit about getting consistency out of the young group.”
Robertson said his side’s finals hopes would hopefully be underpinned by improvement in the Cats batting ranks.
He is planning to experiment with Mortlake’s approach with the willow having now got a season under his belt as leader.
“We’ve been a pretty consistent bowling side the last 10 to 15 years and we’re lucky the kids we have coming through are good bowlers,” Robertson said.
“But we’ll be looking to change the way we play a bit this season and with myself probably needing to find my feet a bit in my first season, we can now tweak a few little things.
“We’ll look to change our game style mainly in the way we approach our batting.”
Robertson said the club was also excited for the upcoming season given the D.C. Farran Oval hard wicket was set to be transformed into a turf wicket after Christmas.
“We’ve got our turf project going so there’ll be a lot hype both on-field as well as off-field this season,” he said.
