The clocktower, which is the most distinguished free-standing clocktower in Victoria, lit up in honour of the 270,000 Australians who face the challenges of epilepsy.

Make March Purple is an awareness and fundraising campaign that supports the vital work carried out by the Epilepsy Foundation for people living with epilepsy in Victoria and in New South Wales.

Epilepsy Foundation chief executive officer Graeme Shears said it was “wonderful” for Corangamite Shire Council to support the cause by allowing the clocktower to be lit up.

“I think epilepsy is generally not well-known in the community, and the support around lighting up the clocktower is a very visible way of raising awareness about epilepsy,” he said.

“We’re hoping it’ll start a conversation – ‘why is the clocktower purple’?

“The Make March Purple campaign this year is really about the unsung heroes – all those people who support those living with epilepsy to live their best lives.

“There’s 68,000 Victorians living with epilepsy at the moment, and I think it’s really important to recognise the 68,000 people and the unsung heroes – the family members, the medical practitioners, the doctors, nurses, social workers, and everyone who gets around and support people with epilepsy.”

The theme for this year’s campaign is ‘Purple Heroes’, highlighting how those living with epilepsy go through life with bravery, strength and resilience.
