Cobden Primary wears blue for Dolly
STUDENTS of Cobden Primary School wore blue and prepared blue milkshakes in honour of Do It For Dolly Day to raise awareness on the impact of bullying on young people.
Do It For Dolly Day is organised by charity Dolly’s Dream, which was created by Kate and Tick Everett following the loss of their 14-year old daughter Dolly to suicide after ongoing bullying.
The day, held on May 8, is in honour of Dolly and encourages opening the conversation around bullying and youth suicide and the money raised through the charity goes towards education and direct support of young people and families.
Cobden Primary School Year five and six teacher Hayley Plozza said the student wellbeing group leadership team had the idea to make blue milkshakes to fundraise for Do It For Dolly Day.
“Making blue milkshakes was a student idea through our leadership program,” she said.
“The wellbeing group decided they’d like to raise awareness for bullying and youth suicide.
“They decided to take part in Do It For Dolly Day and dress in blue.
“In other years we’ve made cookies and decorated with blue icing and stuff, but they were keen to make milkshakes this year with blue as the colour of them.
“The money raised will go towards Do It For Dolly Day.”
Ms Plozza said the school had other leadership teams which were responsible for running different activities throughout the year.
“We have an environment group, a sports group, a culture group and a library group as well,” she said.
“Some of the activities are fundraising, some of them go back towards the school.
“The sports group run sports clubs at lunch times, the library group has run book week and book fairs and things like that.
“The culture group read the Acknowledgement of Country every assembly and do things like Harmony Day and Reconciliation Week.
“We give the kids that opportunity to step up and do some leadership work within the school and the community.”
