Community garden now flourishing
DERRINALLUM’S newest addition to the community hub is flourishing under the dedicated care of five volunteers.
As Western District Newspapers reported in August last year, the Derrinallum Community Garden had been created behind the Derrinallum Creative Gifts building at 32 Main Street.
Over the course of seven months, the garden has produced a variety of fruits and vegetables including corn, zucchinis, carrots, radishes, lettuce, spring onions, garlic, capsicums, pumpkins, snow peas, strawberries, tomatoes, beans, raspberries, rhubarb, rocket and a variety of herbs.
Community garden organiser Rae Pfeiffer said she was excited to see her idea come to fruition.
“We’ve already been producing a fair bit of stuff and giving it out to the community,” she said.
“I love it – it’s beyond any expectation.
“It’s not just about the garden – it’s a place where people can come.
“We’ve had six different individuals come in for a chat and have a look.
“They sit down for half an hour before they leave, then they come back next week and do it again.”
Ms Pfeiffer said there was currently a roster of five volunteers who looked after the daily watering.
“On hot days it gets watered morning and night,” she said.
“We’re rotating what we grow as things die down.
“We are going to put some more veggie boxes in.
“Our long-term project is to include fruit trees and grape vines, but that can be in two years’ time.
“We’ll keep it up and running as long as the community wants it, and get more people involved.”
