FORMER Camperdown College student Bailey McDonald returned to the classroom earlier this week, bringing with him a bronze medal from the 2023 Melbourne to Warrnambool Cycling Classic.

The 19 year-old proved popular among students at the junior campus when he spoke about his success at last weekend’s Classic.

Addressing the whole school, McDonald spoke about the seven plus hour journey from Avalon to Warrnambool, how he eats and drinks during the race and how he began in the sport.

Junior campus assistant principal Jacinta Tolland said the students were excited for the visit and learnt so much about McDonald’s achievement to finish on the podium from 160 riders.

“It was wonderful to have Bailey back in the very room he once learned during his time here on the junior campus before going on to our senior campus where he was our 2021 Dux,” Ms Tolland said.

“Students listened attentively as Bailey covered the mechanics of his state-of-the-art bike and they were very impressed with his third-place medallion and the special jersey acknowledging him as the best young rider.”

Some stand-out “special moments” during the visit included reuniting the superstar with his 2021 prep buddy, Imogen Donlan.

“Imogen was thrilled Bailey remembered her and was very proud to hold the medals during the visit,” Ms Tolland said.

“We really can’t thank Bailey enough for taking time out of his busy and no doubt exhausting schedule to visit and inspire our students.

“We can’t help but wonder if we’ll see more students on their bikes riding to school in the coming weeks.”
