Demons hold on for the win

AN inaccurate Timboon Demons still managed to get the points over Panmure in the round 11 Warrnambool and District senior football match on Saturday.

Inaccuracy at goal by the Demons saw them kick six goals and 16 behinds by three-quarter time, with Panmure in front by four points at the last change.

An extraordinary last quarter saw Panmure restricted to just one goal, with the Demons kicking three goals and a further 15 behinds to run out 23 point winners 9.31.85 to 9.8.62.

“I spoke to Joe Clover, who’s a club legend at Timboon, he’s been around for probably 60 odd years at Timboon football, and he said he’d never seen a scoreline like that before,” Demons coach Andrew Hargreaves said.

“We did a lot right, just not the most important part, which is putting it through the big sticks.”

Hargreaves felt the Demons were the better team after the first term.

“In the first quarter, they were probably all over us, we got a couple late to make it back to that two goal margin at quarter time.

“Then it felt like, in the second quarter, we dominated possession of the play, we just didn’t take our chances, and they took theirs, which kept them in touch at half-time and it was pretty much the same in the third.”

While disappointed with the lack of conversion in the final term, Hargreaves was pleased with how his team finished the game strongly.

“They kicked the first goal of the last quarter, then we had all the play, and I got to thinking, you kick three goals, 15 points so you generated 18 shots on goal - a lot of sides don’t do that for a whole game.

“I was pleased with the amount of ball we had and how we pressured them, and even our switching of the play in the last quarter, we just opened the game right up, we just couldn’t finish it on the scoreboard.”

Liam Loubey was best for the Demons in the win.

“That was only Liam’s second game for us, he’s tough and classy, he kept finding space, and was able to hit a target every time he had ball in hand, and ended up with 30 possessions.

“He’s a real clean footballer and considering he didn’t play footy at all last year, he’s come in and hasn’t missed a beat.”

While Bayley Thompson had plenty of shots, he could only manage one goal and 10 behinds.

It was 18 year old Oscar Norman who led the goal kickers with three.

“It was Oscar’s first game back since round four, and I put him at full forward pretty much the whole game because he’s very quick off the lead, and he’s got good hands above his head.

“Tarkyn (Love) has been our leading goal kicker this year, but I just thought Oscar coming out of the square was going to cause them some trouble, which it did, and I was pleased with his game.”

Skipper Mitchell Wallace returned to the team and was also in the Demons best.

“Mitch was really good, he was away last week, so it was good to have him back through the midfield, his explosive power out of the contest broke the game open a lot for us.

“Then he had a quick five-minute spell at full forward when Oscar came off, we isolated him, which was a bit of a different look for him, and he generated a couple of shots on goal.”

Josh Worboys also impressed Hargreaves with his role.

“Last week Josh played as an inside midfielder all day on their best mid, whereas on the weekend he went to centre half back.

“He played centre half back all day and was able to cut off a lot of ball for us, having that flexibility within our team has been one of our strengths this year.”

This week the sixth-placed Demons, on 20 points, take on seventh-placed Old Collegians, on 12 points, at Davidson Oval.

“It’s going to be a challenge on their home ground, we didn’t play that ground very well last year, it was probably our worst performance of last year.

“We just need to go there and make sure we play the ground a bit better and rise to the occasion, another win would be very important before the break.”

In the reserves, Timboon had a nine point win, 6.7.43 to 5.4.34.

Thomas Ryan, Daniel Shanahan and Jake Robbins were best for the Demons, with Martin Angus kicking two goals.

There was no game for Timboon’s under 18.5 team, while the under 16 Demons played Old Collegians and scored a 7.5.47 to 4.6.30 win.

Jed Watson, Alby Jones and Jeddah Loughnan were best for the under 16 Demons, with Zane Schawalder kicking two goals.

In the under 13.5 game, Panmure had a 1.9.15 to 0.1.1 win.

Darcy Delaney, Harry Salmon, Lenny Oates, Jack McKenzie, William Smith and Jake McNeill were best for the junior Demons in the loss.

In the A grade netball Panmure was too strong, registering a 53-40 win.

Laura Rosolin, Tash Hallyburton and Evie Gordon were the best for the Demons, with Rosolin shooting 22 goals and Brianna Gass 12.

The A reserve game saw Timboon score a 43-28 win.

Giaan Gration, Kira Gordon and Taya Hanegraaf were Timboon’s best, with Macey Gale shooting 22 goals and Hannah Maxwell 17.

Timboon scored a 48-30 win in the B grade netball.

Nicole Burvill, Stella Smith and Jennifer Trigg were best for Timboon, with Sarah Brown shooting 24 goals and Burvill 21.

The 17 and under netball saw Timboon score a big 50-12 win.

Best for Timboon were Ruby Jones, Jasmine Plozza and Willow Roberts, with Ella Drayton scoring 19 goals, Meg Duro 18 and Plozza 13.

Timboon had a 48-12 win in the 15 and under game.

Indii McKenzie, Emily Plozza and Stella Whitehead were the Demons best, with McKenzie scoring 24 goals, Plozza 13 and Imogen Woods 11.

The 13 and under game saw Timboon score a 26-12 win.

Best for the Demons were Grace Richardson, Isla Davis and Milla Loughnan, Elizabeth Plozza leading the scoring with 16 goals and Annabel Doolan seven.

Timboon had a 25-2 win in the 11 and under netball.

Olive Doolan, Isla Dickinson and Addison Whitehead were best for the junior Demons, with Eva Watson shooting 14 goals.
