Digger opens mouth at Curdies River Estuary
BANKED up water along the Curdies River Estuary finally found its way to the ocean following an artificial river mouth opening.

BANKED up water along the Curdies River Estuary finally found its way to the ocean following an artificial river mouth opening.
Contractors completed the artificial river mouth opening on Friday morning to the relief of locals, with high water levels being reported.
Corangamite Catchment Management Authority’s (CMA) estuaries and environmental water manager Jayden Woolley said the Corangamite CMA undertakes monitoring and a risk assessment prior to providing advice to support Parks Vic to artificially open the estuary.
“The artificial estuary opening that took place last Friday has been successful and there has been no fish deaths reported,” he said.
“The Corangamite CMA and Parks Vic will continue to monitor the estuary.
“There can be risks to environmental values when artificially opening the estuary, however high water levels are a risk to infrastructure which can only be alleviated by an estuary opening.”
Mr Woolley said it was illegal to open an estuary without a permit from the Corangamite CMA.
