Drought fund forming
RESIDENTS are being encouraged to donate to a special fund that has been set up by Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) to assist farmers during ongoing drought conditions.
The Western Victoria Drought Emergency Relief Fund (RARF) was established recently to raise funds to support relief projects across the district.
The area includes Rotary district 9780, which houses both the Camperdown and Cobden Rotary Clubs.
Camperdown Rotary Club secretary Graeme Fischer said the relief fund would work in a similar way to an international grant.
“People are able to donate, and they’re tax-free donations,” he said.
“When the fires happened in Terang and Cobden, we got a similar thing and it was money towards hay coming down from New South Wales – often the hay was donated, but we paid for the fuel for the trucks.
“This is the sort of thing the government doesn’t look at doing – it’s things like that that slip through the cracks that Rotary does.
“It’s a positive program that’s trying to help people.”
The fund aims to raise $500,000 to go towards drought relief efforts, with the current tally at $41,077 at time of publication.
