Dunny ready to get uncomfortable

JOHAN Dunn is hoping to raise $5000 for a great cause, but he’s going to have to get a little uncomfortable to do it.

For a great cause: Johan Dunn will be running ten half-marathons in just ten days in a bid to raise money for those experiencing homelessness.

The Woorndoo-Mortlake Tiger will next month take part in Nedd’s Uncomfortable Challenge, which challenges people to commit to choosing something which makes them uncomfortable and then doing it for ten days.

The challenge is inspired by ultramarathon athlete Nedd Brockmann, who in 2022 ran across Australia – raising $2.6 million for homelessness in the process.

Mr Dunn will attempt a half marathon, every day, for ten straight days in a bid to push himself out of his comfort zone and raise vital funds in support of those struggling with homelessness.

He said he was inspired to take part after attending a previous event, Nedd’s Milk Run, in Bonnie Doon earlier this year, as part of a series of events advocating for greater support for those experiencing homelessness.

“Nedd started off as a sparky and when he went to Sydney he saw heaps of homelessness,” Mr Dunn said.

“He got heavily involved talking to people and realised there is a story around everyone and how they got there – none of them want to be in the position that they’re in.

“Everyone needs to do something that’s a bit uncomfortable.

“It teaches you so much about yourself and how to deal with stresses – we should all lean into a bit of discomfort.”

Worthwhile: Johan Dunn has already raised over $3200 in his efforts to give back through undertaking a challenge which requires discomfort.

Mr Dunn set out to raise $5000.

He knew it was an ambitious target, but was shocked when the fundraiser quickly surged to more than $3200.

“If you put your hand up to do something like this, you worry if it’s even going to initially take off or if people will donate,” he said.

“To see the generosity of everyone getting behind it is just an awesome feeling.

“The reward is knowing you’re doing something for someone else.

“If you do stuff for yourself all the time, you don’t get the same feeling as when you’re doing it for others.

“The support has been really good, so it’s going to be a wild ten days.”

Mr Dunn said he planned on keeping things fresh throughout the challenge, with routes across the district planned.

“One of the runs will be Terang to Camperdown, another will be Woorndoo to Mortlake, the Warrnambool foreshore and from Timboon to Port Campbell,” he said.

“I’ll also do the Barwon River Trail in Geelong and cut laps at Lake Wendouree.

“I’ve got a few up my sleeves and I am also planning to do one on the treadmill at the local gym.”

Mr Dunn said any support which the community could provide would be much appreciated.

“The best gift is giving,” he said.

“What a great gift it is to help out people who need it.

“It’s priceless.

“It’s going to hurt for me, so a bit of help would be appreciated.”
