GLENORMISTON artist Jess Fowler hopes to bring colour and vibrancy as revitaliscation works begin on Terang’s information centre.

Ms Fowler began painting the exterior of the centre this week in what will be her biggest mural yet, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Terang.

“I am big on bird paintings, they’re what I mainly paint because they can be made big, bright and fun,” she said.

“When I was contacted to paint the mural on the information centre, it was a perfect opportunity to paint some eye-catching birds which bring some vibrancy to the streetscape.

“The birds are on three sides with a cockatoo and kookaburra on the back wall, a blue wren on the Wheatsheaf side and on the library side a pink galah.

“No matter which way you approach the information centre, you’re going to find a bird which is bright and cheerful to look at.”

Ms Fowler said she was proud to be involved in the revitalisation efforts at the centre, and hoped it would lead to more passersby stopping to learn more about Terang.

“It would be ideal if more people stopped to have a closer look,” she said.

“I’m very, very blessed to have the opportunity to be part of it.”

Ms Fowler painted her first mural in December 2021 in the alleyway between Fraz Family Pharmacy and the Josie Black Centre thanks to the Terang Progress Association.

Her second attempt dwarfs the first in scale, spanning all sides of the information centre.

“There are seven sides to the quirky building, it’s quite interesting, so it has been a lot of fun to get started,” Ms Fowler said.

“I’m so excited.”

The plan currently is for the ledges surrounding the centre to be painted by local students.

Ms Fowler said she was excited to see what the students will contribute.

“It’s awesome,” she said.

“From my understanding they will be painting water so my plan is to incorporate some reeds on the building to compliment what the students will do.

“I think overall it’s going to be a fun, vibrant, interesting, colourful and beautiful mural.”

The High Street structure, opposite the Wheatsheaf Hotel, has come to life in recent years.

The Rotary Club of Terang installed a defibrillator at the site last year with a map of all defibrillators located in Terang.

Clippings from the Terang Express have also recently been put on display in the information centre, highlighting all the latest news in town.

Ms Fowler said the mural will take approximately two weeks to paint, weather permitting, and welcomed those curious to stop by for a closer look.
