Final quarter loss for Bombers
COBDEN pushed North Warrnambool hard for three quarters in the round five Hampden League senior football match on Saturday.
But the reigning premiers were able to kick away in the last quarter to record an 18.7.115 to 9.7.61 win at the Cobden Community Bank Recreation Reserve.
“We were level at three-quarter time, we kicked the first goal of the fourth and then she was all downhill from there,” Cobden coach Brody Mahoney said.
“They definitely lifted up a notch in that last quarter; probably a bit of inexperience cost us in the end.
“They’re definitely the team to beat, a pretty good outfit, pretty well balanced everywhere, they’ll be definitely up there at the pointy end of the year no doubt.”
Angus Uwland was best for the Bombers in the loss.
“Gussy had a really good game out on the wing on the weekend, the way that they set up, they allowed him to get plenty of space and get his hands on the footy a little bit.
“He was pretty damaging for us, he helped us set up our scoring and just by foot with his running (he’s a running machine), he set up a lot through his leg speed.”
Matty Drayton kicked three goals and was named second best for the Bombers.
“He’s been super, he probably could’ve ended up kicking a few more as well on the weekend.
“The ball just unfortunately didn’t bounce his way a few times, which I’m sure his opponent would’ve been thankful for, but I thought he had a great game.”
Archie Taylor’s strong season continues, kicking two goals and named third best.
Another to impress Mahoney was teenager Eddie Walsh, who kicked a goal and was also named in the Bombers best.
“Ed had a good game, he played in a couple of different spots for us, and just seems to be getting better with every game he’s playing at the moment.
“He’s only just turned 18 last week, so he’s another young fella for us that’s just going to keep getting better and better.”
This week Cobden take on Warrnambool at the Reid Oval.
“We love playing on the big deck there, hopefully the conditions are fair and we can have a good game.”
In the reserves, Cobden returned to the winners list with an impressive 82 point win, 13.14.92 to 1.4.10.
Louis Darcy, Blake Mottram and Tully Darcy were the Bombers best, with Mottram bagging seven goals with two each to Louis Darcy and Lachlan Rosolin.
North Warrnambool was too strong in the under 18s, scoring a 19.11.125 to 1.4.10 win.
Broly Henderson, Leonard Walsh and Nate Sambell were Cobden’s best, with Henderson kicking the only goal.
In the under 16 football on Sunday at Bushfield, North Warrrnambool had a thumping 21.24.150 to 0.3.3 win.
Xander Kent, Ace Roberts and Lachlan Darcy were Cobden’s best in the loss.
North Warrnambool had an 8.6.54 to 4.4.28 win in the under 14 game.
Fletcher White, Clement Walsh and Riley Davis were best for Cobden, with Ryan Bailey kicking three goals and Luca Borgia one.
Cobden made it two Open netball wins in a row, defeating North Warrnambool 57-38.
Jessica McGlade, Nadine McNamara and Grace Taylor were best for the Bombers, with Emily Finch scoring 33 goals and Jess Bouchier 12.
Cobden also had a win in the division one game, 39-35.
Bombers best were Isabelle Hutt, Sarae Hickey and Hannah Justin, with Jess Bouchier scoring 14 goals and Jaymie Finch 13.
In division two, Cobden had a 46-29 win.
Steph Mahony shot 37 goals and was named best alongside Emily Hickey and Maddison Clifford.
North Warrnambool got the points in the division three game with a 37-23 win.
Eisha Howard, Charlotte Meade and Courtney Gatens were Cobden’s best, with Howard and Maggie Conheady both scoring 11 goals.
The 17 and under netball saw North Warrnambool score a strong 56-18 win.
Sarah Bridges, Marley Howard and Hannah Robertson were best for the Bombers, with Robertson shooting 12 goals.
North Warrnambool also got the points in the 17 and under reserves with a 33-11 win.
Elizabeth Dennis, Gracie Pearce and Greta Darcy were Cobden’s best, with Ava Bonner scoring eight goals.
The 15 and under game saw North Warrnambool win 31-13.
Maddison Fisher, Grace Hester and Dakoda Baker were best for Cobden, with Dekohda Baxter shooting seven goals.
Cobden had a 23-18 win in the 15 and under reserves.
Bridie Roberts, Grace Barber and Savannah Beames were the Bombers best in the win, with Amelia Katsaros scoring 10 goals and Beames eight.
North Warrnambool won the 13 and under netball 34-25.
Mahli Baxter, Alice Dennis and Zahlia Hill were Cobden’s best, with Charlotte Robertson scoring 13 goals and Hill 12.
The 13 and under reserves netball also went North Warrnambool’s way, 25-10.
Nardia Ferrari and Ruby Glennen were best for the Bombers in the loss, with Charlotte Phillips shooting seven goals.
