HUNDREDS of runners and walkers laced up their joggers last week for the 39th Terang and District Lions Club Fun Run and Walk.
The annual 5.92km trek from Noorat to Terang had endured a month-long postponement following the snap lockdowns in February, but event organiser Kerrin McKenzie said he was “ecstatic” with how the day went.
“I think we had about 330 participants through on the day,” he said.
“It was a great atmosphere and people were happy to be back doing their normal things.
“The whole run and walk just had a good feel to it.”
Mr McKenzie said the proceeds raised from the event will go straight back in to the community.
“The funds are used in a variety of ways, in previous years we’ve funded the Terang Lions walking track and sometimes it has been put in to schools, the hospital or other community events,” he said.
“The money from this year will likely be used to upgrade the walking track.”
Mr McKenzie said the heart of the event was keeping people connected to the region, which held true with the overall men’s and women’s winners having close ties to the town.
“Jacob Bell’s grandmother came from Terang so he has that community connection,” he said.
“Women’s winner Anna Kasapis was raised in Terang. She is a world champion in her age level in the 1500 metres, and her father is a member of the Lions.”
Another familiar face was back for another year with former parliamentarian Stewart McArthur completing the run at 83-years-old.
Mr McKenzie thanked all those involved for their continued support.
“It was really well supported by local businesses and sponsors,” he said.
“Christians Bus Co and Aitken Bus Lines provide their services for free, and the Corangamite Shire was very good with its COVID-19 support.
“It was a really good event.”
