Funding boost for Timboon sport
THE State Government has allocated $136,917 from the 2025-2026 Local Sports Infrastructure Fund to two projects in Corangamite Shire.
Community Sport Minister Ros Spence recently announced $96,917 for multipurpose courts lighting at Timboon Recreation Reserve and $40,000 for the Corangamite Shire Recreation and Open Space Strategy 2026-2036.
Mayor councillor Kate Makin thanked the government for its investment in the health and wellbeing of Corangamite residents.
“Local sport plays a vital role in our communities, not just for the physical health and fitness of the participants, but also for the sense of belonging that comes from spectators enjoying events together,” she said.
“This is great news for the Timboon Recreation Reserve committee who have just delivered a significant upgrade to the netball and tennis courts with funding from council and donors.
“The lighting component is the final stage of the project, which will enhance the existing netball and tennis facilities and encourage increased use of the courts.”
Timboon Recreation Reserve Committee of Management secretary Leeanne Whitehead said the committee had been very hopeful to gain the funding.
“That will allow us to complete all three stages of the courts before winter sets in,” she said.
“We’re relieved we can complete the work now, for the community to use.
“I’d like thank Corangamite Shire and their Sport and Recreation team for enabling this to happen.”
Cr Makin said the Recreation and Open Space Strategy would be an important strategic document.
“The development of this strategy will guide council in the provision of sport, recreation and open space needs into the future,” she said.
“It will include an assessment of what the shire has now, and what the community’s sport, recreation and general open space needs will be over the next 10 years.”
