Fundraiser delivers new hoops
THE next generation of Terang’s basketball and netball stars received a boost thanks to the generous fundraising efforts at St Thomas’ Primary School.
New basketball and netball infrastructure was installed at the school’s courts over the school holidays, giving students a welcome surprise to enjoy during their lunch breaks.
St Thomas’ Primary School principal Matthew Uzkuraitis said the addition was thanks to the dedicated efforts of families putting their hands up to volunteer with the Parents and Friends Association.
“Each year our Parents and Friends Association, which is very active, fundraises throughout the course of the year,” he said.
“We have a major fundraiser which is an online auction.
“We try to identify something at the start of the year which, as a school, we want to refresh or make.
“The majority of the money that is raised will go to what is identified, and this year the basketball hoops were something that we wanted to replace.
“Thanks to the fundraising efforts we were able to get the new hoops installed over the holidays, which has been great for the kids to get out there and get active.”
The hoops include noise-reduction backboards and have already proven popular among the student cohort, with basketball and netball being among the most popular sports in town.
“They are reversible so each of the poles includes a basketball hoop and backboard, in addition to a netball ring,” Mr Uzkuraitis said.
“We’ll be able to utilise it all year-round.
“Terang is a very sporty community and we’ve got a lot of sporty kids at the school.
“Just getting the kids active and playing is an important component but basketball is very popular, particularly once the football and netball season wraps up.”
