Heytesbury wins at Ballarat
HEYTESBURY Indoor Bias Bowls players have once again had a busy week, with pennant round seven producing some strong results.
In division one, Camperdown 1 (Ron Simcox (s), Elizabeth Riches, Gordon Weller and Margaret Ovens) def. Mepunga 3 (Peter Neal (s), Doug Byron, Les Lenehan and Julie Shiels) 20-11.
Mepunga 2 (George Draffen (s), Frank Harney, Rob McCrabb and Karl Keegan) lost to Cobden 1 (David Childs (s), Fred Salmon, Claire Reynolds and Doreen Coverdale) 19-21.
Mepunga 1 (Barb Draffen (s), Helen Harney, Sally Madden and Yvonne Lenehan) lost to Glenormiston 1 (Allen Armistead (s), Scott Pierce, Deb Noonan and Danielle Gilchrist) 16-21.
Timboon Lawn (Noah Mungean (s), Brett Mungean, Pam Dwyer and Jean Clover) drew with Laang-Ecklin (Pam Wines(s), Ken Buck, Kathryn Wines, Allen Cook) 11-all.
The top four this week in division one are Cobden 1 (undefeated), Laang-Ecklin, Timboon Lawn and Mepunga 2.
In division two/three, Camperdown 2 (Graeme Chamberlain (s), Norma Weller, Dianne McSween and Judy Borthwick) lost to Scotts Creek 1 (Neville Robb (s), Trevor Hobbs, Helen Hobbs and Les Neale) 9-21.
Glenormiston 3 (Max Heard (s), Noel Uebergang, Justin Rasmussen and Ray Bond) lost to Cobden 2 (Joyce Roberts (s), Jill Lynch, Kevin Rundle and Pam Savage) 18-24.
Glenormiston 2 (Deb Cheslett (s), Ron Heard, Maureen Bond and Danielle Gilchrist) def. Mepunga 4 (Ian Heatly (s), Gerald Madden, Clarrie Matthew and James Byron) 26-11.
Peterborough (Charles Martin (s), Angela Payne, Ross Wooley and Graeme Murfett) lost to Scotts Creek 2 (Allan Beasy (s), Louise Blair, Marion Frencham and Audrey Armistead) 6-16.
The top four this week in division two/three are Glenormiston 2, Scotts Creek 2, Scotts Creek 1 and Cobden 2.
The Kings Birthday long weekend was a major indoor bowls championship at Ballarat.
Some of the highlights included:
Day one (Saturday):
Mixed fours Allan Beasy, Gary Langenhuizen, Cath Laidlaw and Jason Pearson only won their first game of the day.
Mixed pairs Noah Mungean and Pam Wines managed 2/3 wins, going down by two shots to Northern Districts.
Men’s fours Les Pearson, Ron Simcox, Paul Maher and Ray Bond won 2/3 for the day, going down to Warrnambool Orange in the middle game.
Ladies fours Joyce Roberts, Annette Maher, Maureen Bond and Val Blake won their first game of the day.
Ladies singles Queen Lara Mungean was undefeated for the day with 3/3.
Men’s singles King Arthur Finch could only manage a win in the last game of the day.
Men’s pairs Brett Mungean and Robert George were also undefeated for the day with 3/3.
Ladies’ pairs Pam Dwyer and Jean Clover started their campaign by being undefeated for the day with 3/3.
Ladies triples Rita Mungean, Bec Heard and Sophie Pearson began the weekend with a perfect 3/3 games.
Men’s triples Allen Armistead, Ken Buck and Scott Pierce won their first game convincingly but couldn’t do any more for the day, losing the other two games by one shot each.
Overall, Heytesbury was in second place, only two points behind Ballarat Gold.
On day two, Sunday:
Men’s singles Arthur picked up two more wins for the day, breaking 50 per cent with one game to go.
Ladies’ singles Lara lost to Northern Districts in the first game of the day but picked up wins in the other two for the day, with 5/6 wins. The equation was simple – win against the undefeated Fiona Pearson from Mount Gambier and secure runner-up.
AdvertisementMen’s pairs Brett and Robert picked up another three wins for the day, locking up the men’s pairs championship with one game left.
Ladies’ pairs Pam and Jean picked up a win in the morning but that is where it ended for the day with 4/6 wins.
Men’s fours Les, Ron, Paul and Ray picked up a win in the middle game of the day but that is where the story ended.
Ladies’ fours Joyce, Annette, Maureen and Val picked up two wins and a draw for the day, taking the team to 3.5/6 games.
Men’s triples Allen, Ken and Scott had a clean slate with three wins for the day, taking them to 4/6 wins. The equation was simple – win and lock in runners-up against Warrnambool Blue.
Ladies’ triples Rita, Bec and Sophie won the last game of the day after two defeats and even picked up an eight. So far, the ladies are 4/6 wins and currently in second place. The equation was simple – win at all costs against Northern Districts to lock in runners-up.
Mixed pairs Noah and Pam had a clean sheet with three wins for the day and the equation was – win at all costs against second place Ballarat Gold.
Mixed fours Allan, Gary, Cath and Jason got two wins for a day, taking them to 4/6 wins. Sitting on top, against Warrnambool Orange would secure a placing.
Overall, Heytesbury was on top overall with 83 points, nine points in front of Ballarat Gold and Northern Districts.
On Monday morning, there was one game left.
For some, there would be joy, for others heartbreak.
Men’s singles Arthur picked up a win and placed fifth.
Ladies’ singles Lara couldn’t overcome Fiona from Mount Gambier and placed third on percentage.
Men’s pairs Brett and Robert won their last game to remain undefeated and secure the championship.
Ladies’ pairs Pam and Jean couldn’t overcome Warrnambool Orange and finished up in third place.
Men’s fours Les, Ron, Paul and Ray were defeated by Mount Gambier and finished sixth.
Ladies’ fours Joyce, Annette, Maureen and Val finished the weekend with a win and finished in fourth place.
Men’s triples Allen, Ken and Scott couldn’t overcome Warrnambool Blue by one shot yet again, finishing in third place.
Ladies’ triples Rita, Bec and Sophie picked up a win and secured runners-up.
Mixed pairs Noah and Pam couldn’t defeat Ballarat Gold and finished third.
Mixed fours Allan, Gary, Cath and Jason secured a draw in their last match, securing runners-up.
Heytesbury won overall on 92 points, only one point in front of Ballarat Gold.
Congratulations to all players on a fantastic overall effort, as well as all the winners and runners-up.
The last time Heytesbury won the overall title was in 2019, proving that these things are hard to come by – which is a great indicator of a fantastic competition.
