HUNDREDS gathered in Mortlake for the highly-anticipated return of the Mortlake Quick Shear last Friday evening.
Mac’s Hotel was packed to capacity as the community turned out in force to watch 84 competitors show their skills.
Organiser Corey Mifsud said he was thrilled with the return of the popular event.
“Everything went really well,” he said.
“Coming three years off COVID we were not too sure how we’d go getting the crowd and competitors back but we had over 80 competitors and a packed house with probably around three to four hundred people.
“We’re happy with how everything went, and how the competition went with reallyfast times.
“We probably couldn’t have expected it to go any better.”
Whanake Whare claimed first place among 38 open competitors with a blazing time of 18.34 seconds.
Paerata Abraham was second with an 18.72 time and Caleb Morgan finished third with a time of 19.86.
The senior competition drew 34 competitors with Wills Taylor claiming the win in a time of 25.61 seconds.
Phillip Edwards (25.03) and Connor Mottram (37.72) rounded out the top three.
The women’s competition drew 12 competitors with Hannah McColl claiming victory in just 25.65 seconds.
Mikayla Hall finished runner up with a time of 29.39 seconds and Annette Maki nabbed third in 34.96 seconds.
Mr Mifsud thanked those who helped to make the night a success.
“We need to thank all our sponsors; without them, competitions don’t run,” he said.
“A big thanks to the competitors, including some who travelled from New Zealand and Melbourne, and all the spectators who made it a great night.
“Hopefully we can build it up to be bigger again next year and let it run for another 30 years if we can.
“It would be great if we could get some more sponsors and volunteers on board to keep building this event up, and hopefully be able to offer some more prize money next year to draw in even more competitors.”
