Inconsistent rain through April
EARLY rains throughout April boosted the monthly tally, but a dry second half of the month saw the region again experience rain below the long-term average.
In Terang, more than 2mm of rain hit the ground on 10 of the 12 days between April 6 and April 17, with five of the days exceeding 5mm.
The run of wet weather began with the highest recorded daily tally throughout the month at 7.6mm.
The second half of the month proved drier, with no significant rain recorded from April 18 onwards.
The result for the month reached 51.4mm of rain hitting the ground, which fell below the long-term average of 62.8mm.
The result was notably higher than the previous year, with just 17.6mm of rain falling in April 2025.
Terang stands at just 60.2mm of rain throughout the first four months of the year, which is well below the long-term average of 186.5mm over the same period.
Meanwhile in Mortlake, the rainfall result for April narrowly missed reaching the long-term average.
The result saw 41.4mm of rain falling over Mortlake throughout April, which was just 2.5mm below the 43.6mm long-term average.
The highest daily rainfall occurred on April 6 at 9.6mm over 24 hours which, as with Terang, led to a consistent period of rain for almost two weeks.
From April 18 onwards, however, just 0.6mm of rain was recorded to have hit the ground over the final 13 days of the month.
The April 2026 result was a far cry from the same period in 2025, when just 11mm of rain hit the ground last April.
The total rainfall over Mortlake this year now stands at 66.8mm, well below the long-term average of 140.2mm expected over the same period.
