Lengthy works underway

WORKS are underway to build two new overtaking lanes at both Terang and Garvoc, but the process on the first stage at Terang could see traffic management in place for the next six months.

Timely upgrades: Works have begun on more than four kilometres of new overtaking lanes on the Princes Highway on either side of Terang, but works could take up to six months to complete.
Timely upgrades: Works have begun on more than four kilometres of new overtaking lanes on the Princes Highway on either side of Terang, but works could take up to six months to complete.

Two new overtaking lanes on the Princes Highway are expected to be delivered in 2026 totalling more than 4.3 kilometres.

A 1.9km overtaking lane will be established east of Terang in the Terang-bound lane, between Pontings Road and Spring Dam Road.

A larger 2.4km overtaking lane will also be established east of Garvoc in the Terang-bound lane, between Coombes Road and Ridge Road.

Construction of the new overtaking lane between Pontings Road and Spring Dam Road started this month.

Early works which are currently underway include site establishment and minimal vegetation removal.

The major works – which includes construction of the new lanes and pavement and drainage improvements – will follow and take up to six months to complete, weather permitting.

Western District Newspapers understands the location was identified through investigations undertaken as part of the Princes Highway Corridor Investment Program.

A Department of Transport and Planning spokesperson said the upgrades would support the modern flow of traffic experienced on the highway.

“We’re installing two overtaking lanes on the Princes Highway at Terang to improve road safety,” the spokesperson said.

“This project will ensure the road is able to meet the demands of today’s traffic volumes, providing a safe and secure road connection along the Princes Highway for all road users.”

Traffic management will include reduced speed limits and lane closures, as required, for the safety of crews and road users.

Western District Newspapers understands the overtaking lane between Coombes Road and Ridge Road will also be constructed in 2026.

Funding for the upgrades were included as part of the Australian Government’s $322.9 million investment into the Princes Highway Corridor.
