Lisa celebrates basketball gold
VIC Country’s under 16 female basketballers have won gold at the National Junior Championships in Bendigo.

The team, accompanied by Terang’s Lisa Chesshire as team manager, defeated Vic Metro 60-52 in the gold medal game on Sunday, July 12.
“The championships were held at the Red Energy Arena in Bendigo from Saturday July 4 through to Sunday, July 12,” Lisa said.
“We played our first game against New South Wales Metro as a showcase game after the opening ceremony on day one and won by two points, 69-67.”
Placed in Pool B for the tournament, Vic Country faced NSW Metro, Queensland North, WA Metro, SA Metro and the ACT.
After a successful round-robin, Vic Country went into the gold medal match knowing their opponents (Vic Metro) were eager to go back-to-back with another win.
“Metro had spent all week defeating their opponents by 40-odd points so we knew it was going to be tough,” Lisa said.
“They were certainly the favourites but our defensive intensity brought them down, forcing 24 turnovers which resulted in 17 points.
“The defensive pressure also saw Metro shoot at just 28 percent. The last time Vic Country won gold in the women’s was back in 1990 so this win was extra special.”
Lisa has been team manager with Basketball Vic Country since 2014 when her daughter, Maddison, was first selected for the state program.
