Magpies go down in final quarter

CAMPERDOWN’S senior footballers got within three points of the sixth-placed Koroit at Leura Oval last weekend.


The Magpies led by 13 points with just 12 minutes of the game remaining, but were overrun by a fast-finishing Saints, 8.9.57 to 8.12.60.

“We went from playing to win to playing not to lose with still too much time remaining,” lamented Camperdown coach Clinton Thomas.

“We had our share of opportunities all the way through.”

Luke O’Neil and Angus Gordon were best for Camperdown in the narrow loss.

“Luke and Angus again were rock solid down back, very dependable, quality defenders.”

Thomas also liked the games of Josh Place and Harry Sumner.

“Josh has had a big few weeks and contests really well.

“Harry did an incredible job on Koroit’s Connor Byrne, he gets the job done no matter what we ask him.”

While disappointed with the result, Thomas said the Magpies took plenty of positives out of the encounter.

“We know that we go into most games as the underdog,” he said.

“We played some really good footy on Saturday and progress is being made.”

Camperdown has another home game this week, hosting Terang Mortlake at the Leura Oval.

“Both teams will look different to round one (where Camperdown won), Terang Mortlake has hit some good form and it will be another tough game.”

Koroit scored a convincing 17.15.117 to 2.0.12 win in the reserves.

Eddie Lucas, Tim Fitzgerald and Jake Clissold were Camperdown’s best, with Lucas and Tarkyn Love kicking a goal each.

Under 16 player Paddy Hassett played his first game at reserves level last weekend.

Koroit had a big 25.18.168 to 1.3.9 win in the under 18s.

Charlie Londregan kicked Camperdown’s only goal, with Ned Molan, Taj Cunningham, Ollie Delaney and Isaac Cootesmith best for the under 18 Magpies.

The under 16 game saw Camperdown get the points with a 6.7.43 to 3.7.25 win.

Dustin Lane kicked two goals for the under 16 Magpies.

Consistent full back Max Rees was named as best, alongside Archie McDonald and Charlie Londregan.

Koroit was too strong in the under 14 game, winning 9.7.61 to 0.1.1.

Harry Sinnott, Jimmy Cheeseman, Charlie Bourke, Edie Molan, Miller Murphy and Tyler Daffy were best for Camperdown.

Koroit also got the points in the under 12 football with a 7.11.53 to 0.1.1 win.

Angus Murphy, William Sinnott and Fergus Lilllie were best for the junior Magpies.

Koroit was too strong in the Open netball with a 76-40 win.

Sophie Conheady, Nell Mitchell and Elsie Sinnott were best for Camperdown in the loss.

Gola shooter Nell Mitchell scored 23 goals, with Piper Stephens scoring 17.

The division one netball match saw Koroit have a 36-34 win.

Jessica Cameron, Isla Fleming and Isobel Sinnott were Camperdown’s best, with Kiara Love scoring 23 goals.

Koroit led all day in the division two netball to record a 40-32 win.

Emily Field, Kate Hallyburton and Lauren Groen were best for the Magpies, with Groen shooting 18 goals and Grace Dawson 14.

Koroit got the points in division three with a 58-26 win.

Best for the Magpies were Sondi Guthrie, captain Lauren Murphy and Airlee Cole.

Jess Van den Eynde top scored with 15 goals.

Camperdown’s 17 and under team had its first loss of the season, going down 42-35.

Macy Mahony, Elsie Sinnott and Claire Blain were the Magpies best, with Georgia Oates scoring 21 goals and Mahony 14.

The 17 and under reserves game went Koroit’s way, the Saints winning 36-12.

Best for Camperdown were Charli Lee, Grace Fleming and Kayla Loving.

Koroit took the points in the 15 and under netball with a 28-15 win.

Tatum Courtney, Elle Mahony and Olive Wills were the Magpies best, with Kiara Love scoring 13 goals.

Camperdown got the points in the 15 and under reserves with a 29-26 win.

Bonnie Van Den Berghe, Sasha Kerr and Evie Mahony were best, with Mahony scoring 22 goals and Courtney Blain seven.

Koroit recorded a 44-28 win in the 13 and under netball.

Best for Camperdown were Mali Maskell, Etti Glennen and Stella Hinds, with Maskell shooting 25 goals.

Camperdown had a 24-16 win in the 13 and under reserves game.

Vogue Fleming, Zoe Unwin and Zahlia Hill were best for Camperdown, with Hill scoring 13 goals and Ruby Johnston 10.
