Camperdown Bowls Club representatives Ron Cameron (s), Mathew Brewer, Kelvin Rundle and Barry Atchison won the West Coast Region Fours finals last Sunday.

The Mapgies players earned their place at the finals, hosted by City Memorial Bowls Club, after winning the Corangamite Fours title earlier in the year.

In the first match Camperdown came up against the Dunkeld team of S. Cullinane (s), C. Clements, T. Jackson and C. Burrell.

The Mapgies got away to a slow start, getting out-bowled early in the game and trailing 1-20 after eight ends.

But the tide turned in end nine when Camperdown scored four shots to herald a new phase of the game.

Cameron’s side turned up the heat from that point on, preventing Dunkeld from scoring a single shot through the last 10 ends and ultimately prevailing 23-20.

Cameron said his team stuck to the old adage of “Never say die” as they effected their unlikely comeback.

The win over Dunkeld put Camperdown into the grand final, where they faced a Portland team consisting of J. Rappard (s), I. Robinson, M. Jennings and J. Pye.

Camperdown led by five or six shots throughout the final, maintaining control throughout the match.

Portland fought hard, scoring three shots on the last end, but it wasn’t enough to overtake the Magpies, who triumphed 16-14.

Cameron’s team will now travel to Bendigo in the first week of May to compete at the state championships.
