Mistakes prove costly for Tigers
A STRONG final quarter effort from Lake Bolac saw Woorndoo/Mortlake’s senior footballers go down by 22 points last weekend.
The Tigers led by two points at the last change but could only manage two behinds in the last quarter, while Wickliffe/Lake Bolac kicked four majors to secure the win, 11.9.75 to 8.5.53.
“We really only put together two decent quarters, we were pretty poor in the other two,” lamented Woorndoo/Mortlake coach Isaac Templeton.
“We had plenty of skill errors and kept making the same mistakes.”
Darcy Graham and Kane Maghamez kicked two goals each for Woorndoo/Mortlake, with Simon Atkinson, Graham and Ed Gubbins the Tigers best.
Templeton praised Atkinson for his game.
“Simon was fantastic in the back pocket, he played his role perfectly.
“Our whole backline has been playing well and holding us together.”
Injuries have hurt the Tigers’ depth, with veteran Wayne Loader called up to fill in, contributing a goal.
The now sixth-placed Woorndoo/Mortlake have another tough encounter this week, hosting third-placed Penshurst at Woorndoo.
Wickliffe/Lake Bolac were too strong in the reserves, scoring a 15.12.102 to 3.1.19 win.
Chris Crawley, Matthew Bourchier and Harry Wills were best for Woorndoo/Mortlake.
The under 16.5 Tigers had their first win of the season with a 10.6.66 to 3.1.19 win.
Sam Mahncke kicked five goals and was best on ground, with Emmet Sheaves and Elijah Bradbury also in the best players for the junior Tigers.
Woorndoo/Mortlake had a big 51-18 win in the A grade netball.
“It was exactly what we needed,” a happy Tigers coach Bec Rohan said.
“A massive team effort, we put together many things that we’ve worked hard on at training.”
Woorndoo/Mortlake restricted Wickliffe/Lake Bolac to just eight first half goals in a dominant defensive effort led by goal keeper Rohan and goal defence Mia Richie.
“Mia and I worked well together, Mia is such a well organised defender,” Rohan said.
“Tash Killen slotted in well as wing defence too.”
The Tigers coach rated Elise Killen as best for Woorndoo/Mortlake.
“Elise was a standout as centre, she ran hard and gave us drive and composure.”
Goal shooter Brooke Richardson returned to the line-up and scored 29 goals, with goal attack Nicole Anderson shooting 20.
“It was great to have Brooke and Nicole back as an experienced pairing up forward again, they were fantastic.”
A big game against second-placed Penshurst awaits the sixth-placed Tigers.
“It’s a big hit-out ahead, we’ll look to continue to put in place things we’ve been training for and hit the rest of the season hard.”
The B grade game saw a 30-26 win the Tigers, with Alanna Miller and Alison Greig named the team’s best.
And in the C grade match, Lake Bolac again took the points, defeating the Tigers 30-20.
Best players for Woorndoo Mortlake were Amelia Horan and Annalise Abbott.
The Tigers’ 18 and under side remains on the hunt for its fourth win after a bye last weekend.
In the 15 and under game, the Tigers celebrated their seventh win of the season defeating the Magpies 33-24.
Best for the team were Indi Wardlaw and Ivy Wardlaw.
In the 13 and under competition, Woorndoo Mortlake still holds fourth position on the ladder despite a 16-8 loss last weekend.
Mia Wardlaw shot four goals for the Tigers and was named in the team’s best.
