Mortlake Bowls- Notes
IN what was meant to be the preliminary finals for both divisions one and four at Mortlake bowls last Saturday, turned out to be anti-climactic at best.

IN what was meant to be the preliminary finals for both divisions one and four at Mortlake bowls last Saturday, turned out to be anti-climactic at best.
Despite having hit a high 30degrees the day before, the heavens opened up and a downpour at about 2pm ended any chance we had to start by a certain time.
Unfortunately by 3pm play could have commenced but it was called off for the day.
There were similar scenes at Lawn Tennis for division four so both teams are going to try again this Saturday.
The selections haven't changed so here are the teams:
Mortlake Blue (div. 1) play City Red at Warrnambool: D. Grant(s),C. Goldsworthy, J.Marney, P. Beardsley; G.Draffen (s), P. Summerhayes, D. Dolling, S. Pierce (m); L. Johnson (s), D.McNicoll, R.Draffen, A. Wentworth. Emergency: C. Inverarity.
Mortlake Gold (div. 4) play City Orange at Lawn Tennis BC: D. Murray (s), J. Wallace, C. Richie, L. Smith; J. Rasmussen(s), K.O’Shannessy, D. Caudle, N. Boyden. Manager, emergency F. Robertson.
Games will start at 1pm Saturday so come along and cheer The Lakers on for a spot in the grand final.
Last Sunday saw Mortlake host some region finals: women’s Champion of Champions, women’s singles and mixed pairs.
In the mixed pairs, Les Johnson and City's Betty Johnson overcame Apollo Bay in the morning to book a place in the final that afternoon.
The match was tight all the way, with the biggest margin at one point being three shots either way.
After 14 ends, Winchelsea was down 9-11 and a chance to force an extra end and have the last bowl of the match.
The last end was a fairly tight head, with good bowls from all players.
Betty bowled two absolute bombs to apply pressure on Winchelsea but their reply meant that Winchelsea had one shot heading into the turn.
Time for the skips to close out the match - Les' first bowl was slightly off target but in the head and nearby to the jack.
Winchelsea's first bowl was off target and in the ditch.
Les' last bowl was a little wide but covered their opposition bowls.
It came down to the last bowl of the match and Winchelsea was about 2mm from forcing a play-off end.
Heartbreak for Winchelsea but elation for the WDPA composite team of Les and Betty Johnson.
Not to be outdone, the over 60s pennant played its semi-finals last Tuesday at Cobden and it was quite the red letter day for both Mortlake teams.
Top of the table Mortlake Blue played Timboon and defeated them 44-28.
D. Murray def. R.Absolom 18-17; M. Heard def. T. Hose 26-11.
Third placed Mortlake White played against Camperdown White and also defeated them 46-33.
A. Wentworth def. J. Clover 36-12; P. Palmer lost to B. Berry 10-21.
In next week's grand final Mortlake Blue play Mortlake White for bragging rights.
The action kicks off next Tuesday, March 7 from 11am at Cobden.
