New GP comes to town
TIMBOON and District Healthcare Service has welcomed a new general practitioner (GP) to its medical clinic, Dr Clodagh Birmingham, who is a new face in town.
Dr Birmingham recently moved to Timboon and took up the GP role at Timboon Medical Clinic and moved to the town with her young family.
She said she’s been settling in well in the community after being drawn to a rural practice.
“Everyone’s been so welcoming and really friendly and helpful,” Dr Birmingham said.
“I’ve been living in Australia for the last eight years, so we’ve moved down from the surf coast.
“The opportunity to work in a rural community brought me to Timboon and such a beautiful region creates lots of opportunities to explore the region.
“I’ve got a young family and we like to get outside, go biking and hiking and explore the beautiful coastline.
“We thought it was a nice opportunity for our family to live down here.”
Originally from Ireland, Dr Birmingham qualified as a doctor in 2015 and moved to Australia in 2018 for the opportunity to work and travel.
She said she was drawn to general practice due to its versatility and opportunity to see a wide variety of patients and cases.
“I worked for a number of years in hospital medicine doing adults, general medicine, and also spending some time as a respiratory registrar,” Dr Birmingham said.
“The reason I wanted to work in general practice was the variety that general practice offers.
“I love all aspects of medicine and the opportunity to provide care for all ages is a great privilege and very rewarding.
“I also have a special interest in chronic disease management, women’s health, children’s health and dermatology.
“Working in general practice allows me to treat all those conditions.”
Dr Birmingham said she had always wanted to study medicine from a young age.
“My father was a general practitioner as well so I’ve always had him as a great inspiration,” she said.
“I was attracted to studying medicine as I really enjoyed science at school and also the social opportunities through working with colleagues and caring for patients.
“I chose medicine to study after school and really enjoyed it.”
Dr Birmingham completed her GP training in Victoria and fellowed with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.
She also did further training during her studies, earning a postgraduate certificate in both dermatology and sexual health.
Dr Birmingham has also done postgraduate examinations in general internal medicine.
“I’m happy to look after all conditions and I have availability if people want to make an appointment to come and see me,” she said.
“Timboon is a beautiful town and everyone has been so friendly and welcoming.
“It has a really nice community feel and there’s lots of lovely places to try locally as well which is nice.
“I look forward to being part of the local community.”
