Olympic bronze for Smith
THE western district is once again celebrating an Olympic medallist following shooter Penny Smith’s bronze medal performance this week.
The 29 year-old from Bookaar claimed Australia’s second medal on day five in Paris, winning bronze in the women’s trap shooting.
After finishing the qualification round in a three-way tie for sixth, Smith won a shoot-off to progress to the final – where she performed brilliantly to finish third.
This is Australia’s 12th Olympic medal in shooting, and the sixth bronze.
Speaking to media after her medal-winning performance, Smith thanked all those who had supported her along the way.
“To my family back home, to everyone watching me, and everyone who has supported me through the highs and lows, to come home with a bronze is phenomenal,” she said.
“I did it the hard way having to shoot-off to get into the final. It’s nice to add another one (medal) to the Camperdown tally after Grace Brown winning gold in cycling.”
This is the first Olympic medal for Smith, who is ranked number 11 in the world.
She placed sixth in the trap and mixed trap team events at the Tokyo Games.
