Out and About (Port Campbell)
Our Cobden Timboon Coast Times photographer was this week ‘Out and About’ in Port Campbell and caught some friendly faces in town
Locals and visitors were out and about in Port Campbell on Monday, April 27 enjoying the warm weather and seeing all the town had to offer.
A group of teachers from the School for Student Leadership Gnurad-Gundidj Campus as well as a couple from Warrnambool College were braving the surf to complete some lifesaving training.
“We are doing our bronze medallion training for our surf bronze with Harry (Ian Harris) from the Port Campbell Surf Lifesaving Club,” Jo Barton said.
“It’s four days and it’s online and in person, with CPR, first aid, rescues and learning how to keep people safe in the water.
“Today we did our run-swim-run, where you run along the beach, touch the cliff, run back, swim out to Harry and back.
“We were doing our rescues today, practising rescuing on a board, with a tube and dragging patients out of the water and doing our doctor’s ABCD first responder response to potential victims in the water.
“Harry is just volunteering his time, he doesn’t get a cent – he’s from the Port Campbell Surf Lifesaving Club.”
Families were strewn about on the foreshore enjoying a picnic lunch in the warm weather, including Ben Thomas with his children Ruby and Arlo Thomas visiting all the way from Hobart.
“We’re staying on the mainland for five days, not that long,” Mr Thomas said.
“My wife, Chloe, her family is from Warrnambool, and my sister lives in Warrnambool, so we come here a lot to visit.
“We’ve come to Port Campbell for the day because it’s close to Warrnambool and it’s nice.
“We enjoy the beaches, the rural sort of feel of the area, it’s nice and cruisy.
“It’s got a nice feel to it.”
Further up the street outside the Port Campbell Takeaway sat Penny Howell and Heather Gay, a mother-daughter duo passing through on their way home to Geelong.
“We’re visiting – we went to Warrnambool for two nights,” Ms Howell said.
“We’re on our way home, we’ve just been to the 12 Apostles and now we’re passing through Port Campbell.
“We went to the 12 Apostles a long time ago, maybe 15-20 years ago.
“I’ve seen the cove part of Port Campbell, the water and the nice bay, on Instagram.
“We sort of just saw it on the way through and we needed petrol.”
Ms Howell said Port Campbell was a great spot to stop for a bite to eat and said she would consider a future stay.
“The town is really nice,” she said.
“We thought we might have to come back and stay two nights because they’ve got a nice beach for the kids.”
Back down on the foreshore, Yatie Nasir along with her mother Jamaliah Buyong were taking photos of the beach after traveling all the way from Malaysia.
“I’m here to meet my son who is studying here for eight months at Deakin University,” Mrs Nasir said.
“I’ve come to Port Campbell to visit all the beautiful sceneries around Melbourne.
“We went to the 12 Apostles – the beaches are so beautiful because the sea is clearly blue and it’s so exciting for me to see.
“We’ve really enjoyed the weather here.
“It’s not so hot and that’s been really interesting here.”
