Police disappointed by drink drivers
CAMPERDOWN Police have had a busy week, expressing disappointment in the number of drivers caught driving under the influence of alcohol.
Camperdown Police Sergeant Natalie Jorgensen said two of the three drivers caught last week were in the days before Operation Regal over the King’s Birthday long weekend.
“At approximately 7.18pm on Tuesday, June 2, Camperdown Police intercepted a vehicle driven by a male in his mid-20s from the Colac area,” she said.
“The male returned a positive breath test of 0.090.
“At approximately 9pm on Thursday, June 4, Camperdown Police intercepted a vehicle driven by a male in his 50s from the Camperdown area.
“The male returned a positive breath test of 0.071.
“Both drivers were issued with infringement notices which carry a six-month loss of licence and $611 fine.”
A third driver was intercepted during a patrol on the Hamilton Highway in Lismore on Sunday, June 7 during Operation Regal.
Sgt Jorgensen said a vehicle was registered travelling at 115 kilometres per hour in a 100km zone.
“Upon intercept the 36-year-old male, from the Corangamite area, refused to undergo a preliminary breath test and will be summonsed to court at a later date,” she said.
“Penalties for refusing to undergo a preliminary breath test can be two years loss of licence.”
Sgt Jorgensen said drink driving was unacceptable, having no place in the community.
“Every time someone gets behind the wheel after consuming alcohol, they put their own life and the lives of other road users at risk,” she said.
“The consequences can be devastating for families, friends and the wider community.
“Police will continue to actively enforce drink-driving laws and conduct regular roadside testing to ensure our roads remain safe.
“If you plan to drink, plan a safe way home.”
