Process continues for flood resilience
MOYNE Shire Council has launched the latest step towards future-proofing a vital transport route which has proven flood-prone.
Council last week endorsed Civilnow for the installation of box culverts on Mortlake’s Connewarren Lane at last week’s Ordinary Meeting of Council.
The contract was awarded for a price of $575,046 with any variation to the contract managed by financial delegation.
The project is part of the Commonwealth Government’s Disaster Ready Fund, which saw the Connewarren Lane Flood Resilience Project receive funding in August 2024.
The project aims to mitigate the risk of future flooding events in and around the Hopkins River through infrastructure improvements such as culvert upgrades, the installation of gabion mattress and plinth, shoulder protection works and waterproofing of road pavement.
Councillor Lloyd Ross moved the motion, with councillor Susan Taylor as seconder.
Councillor Jim Doukas sought clarification on the road treatment following the installation of the culverts.
“Are we going to get that special rubbery stuff… because the culvert won’t alleviate all the flooding?” he said.
Moyne Shire Council director of assets and community Liam Arnott said the process of determining road upgrades as part of the project was currently in the design phase.
“We’ve undertaken pavement design for the road component, which will be delivered in the 2026/2027 financial year,” he said.
“We expect that to be a type of stabilised pavement, but it is yet to be determined which type will be flood resilient.”
The motion was carried unanimously in a 6-0 vote with councillor Lisa Ryan not present.
