James Eller visited Terang last Thursday as part of a yearly tradition.

Each year he stops in town on his way through to the Port Fairy Jazz Festival to host a one-night-only concert at the Commercial Hotel – and, every year, his grandparents Harold and Jeanette Eller are proudly lining up for front row seats.

This year marked a special occasion for the family as the 15-year-old has begun studying a bachelor degree at the Jazz Music Institute one of Australia’s highest rated jazz music institutions.

“I’m only in Year 10 this year but I’ve been given the opportunity to study at the Jazz Music Institute in Brisbane,” James said.

“I’m starting my Bachelor of Music, which is great.

“I don’t know too many people my age starting it this early, so I’ve got a head start, but it’s without a doubt what I want to do with my life.”

James said his visits to Terang and Port Fairy are always a highlight.

“I love visiting the region to perform in Terang and at the Port Fairy Jazz Festival,” he said.

“At the festival I perform with a few different bands in addition to my own band, James E and Mates.

“I love playing music – I was originally introduced to the Port Fairy Jazz Festival by my grandparents and I’ve loved the festival ever since, and I love getting to stop through town on my way to perform in front of my grandparents.”

Harold and Jeanette Eller were all smiles last week as the community turned out in force to show their support for the couple’s grandson.

“We’re so proud of him, and his father (Eric) who is so supportive, running him around to concerns,” Mrs Eller said.

“We love getting to see him play.”
