Race acquisitions set to launch new era

THE addition of two feature races is set to launch a new era of jumps racing in Terang.

Fresh off a successful Terang Cup, the Terang and District Racing Club won’t get much time to rest, with Super Jumps Day to be held at Terang Racecourse this Sunday, April 19.

Terang and District Racing Club committee member Des McKinnon said the addition of two big time races was a boon for the town in drawing in fresh talent and sponsorship opportunities.

The day’s racing will feature five races, but two of the races are eye-opening additions for the club.

“This year we will have two feature races heading into the jumps,” he said.

“The Ecycle Solutions MJ Bourke Hurdle and the JEH Spencer Memorial Steeplechase will both be running this year in Terang.

“The races had previously been run in Pakenham but they are no longer doing jumps, so we’ve been able to bring the races here.

“It’s a real feather in the cap for racing in Terang.

“They’ll both be feature races which are leading into the May Racing Carnival, and with both races having $75,000 in prize money we’re hopeful to attract some big names.”

Mr McKinnon said members of both families, the Spencers and the Bourkes, will be in attendance on the day.

“The opportunity to bring these races to Terang is a bit of a coup for the Terang and District Racing Club and the town,” he said.

“We’re looking forward to jumping continuing in Terang.”

Mr McKinnon said top tier talent was expected to be on display, with early whispers some gun jumpers could be heading to Terang.

“Stern Idle is owned by former football player and media personality Sam Kekovich and Jayco Caravan boss Gerry Ryan,” he said.

“He has been a dashing jumper who won the steeplechase in Warrnambool in 2024.

“He’s got a good record and I think he’s going to be running.

“Ciaron Maher might have another quality horse running, but it remains to be seen.”

Gates will open from 11.30am with bookmakers, dining room meals, kiosk and a full bar operating on the day.
