MORTLAKE has received a fresh supply of ready-to-catch rainbow trout in time for the school holidays.

Victorian Fisheries Authority recently stocked Tea Tree Lake with a supply of 300 advanced yearling rainbow trout, which are suitable to be caught immediately.

The stocking program aims to encourage families to go fishing, with 32,000 fish going into more than 80 lakes across the state just in time for school holidays.

Minister for Fishing and Boating Melissa Horne said rainbow trout are perfect for kids or anyone new to fishing because they are easy to catch and take a range of bait such as worms and Powerbait.

“These school holiday stockings are part of our ongoing focus to deliver a record number of fish to our waterways in 2021, and get more Victorians fishing, more often,” she said.

“Family fishing lakes are a wonderful option because they combine good facilities with safe access and stocked fish that are relatively easy to catch by anglers of all ages and skill levels.”

The trout were grown by the Victorian Fisheries Authority team at its Snobs Creek hatchery, near Eildon.

Anglers are reminded a daily bag limit of five trout applies, of which only two can exceed 35 centimetres.

Fish stocking is funded by recreational fishing licence fees and the State Government’s $35 million plan to get more people fishing.
