Region receives a month’s rainfall over three days
A downpour lashed the south west over the long weekend in a welcome reprieve from the drought conditions which have lashed the south west for more than a year.

Terang experience the highest daily rainfall result over a 24-hour period on June 8 when 44mm of rain was recorded as hitting the ground – the highest single-day rainfall result since June 2021 when 50mm of rain fell.
Across the three days of the long weekend, Terang experienced 85mm of rainfall – which resulted in flooding along the side of multiple streets, roadsides and paddocks.
The figure surpasses the June long-term average for the entire month, which stands at just 77.9mm.
The single day result on June 8 of 44mm was significantly higher than any monthly result through 2025, with the three-day weather event comfortably surpassing the 59.2mm of rainfall experienced throughout Autumn.
Cobden saw slightly less rain but still experienced 72.6mm of rain over the long weekend, almost reaching the long-term monthly average of 82.3mm.
The highest daily result occurred on June 8 when 37mm hit the ground, the largest single-day rainfall result since October 2022.
Mortlake also saw significant rainfall, with 75.8mm falling over the three-day weekend – far surpassing the 54mm long-term monthly average for June.
The highest daily rainfall on June 8 reached 41.2mm, the highest daily result Mortlake had experienced since September 2022.
While such conditions are not forecast to continue, the Bureau of Meteorology expects the south west to experience light rain each day for the coming week.
A downpour of heavy rain will provide some much-needed reprieve for farmers, however the recovery efforts from the lingering drought are far from over.
The region will require consistent rain through the remainder of the year to help the industry get back on track, but a late ‘Autumn break’ at the start of Winter is cause for some optimism the conditions could yet improve.
At the time of publication, rainfall results had not yet officially updated for some communities throughout the region.
