Roads to be discontinued
SECTIONS of the road reserves in Lord and Adams Streets in Cobden will be discontinued with the land transferred to the Crown for incorporation into the Cobden Recreation Reserve.
At Corangamite Shire Council’s Ordinary Meeting of Council last month, councillors unanimously moved the motion to authorise the transfer of the discontinued road reserve land to the Crown.
The existing boundary fence lines along the Cobden Recreation Reserve in Lord and Adams Streets extends into the road reserve by approximately four metres and 1.5 metres respectively.
A recently installed shelter for the netball courts has been constructed to the fence line along Lord Street and, as a result, encroaches into the road reserve.
The Cobden Recreation Reserve Committee of Management (CoM) has prepared plans for the redevelopment of the sports pavilion with the design based on construction extending to the existing fence line.
The intention is to realign the road reserve boundaries of Lord and Adams Streets so the encroachments from the Cobden Recreation Reserve are removed.
Councillor Jo Beard moved the motion and said it was a common misconception the roads were being shortened.
“It’s important to note that even though it does state that it’s road discontinuation, it’s not actually the road itself,” she said.
“I’ve had queries within the community of people saying, ‘Why is the road going to be shortened?’ so I had to explain what it was all about.
“Just to give a little bit of context, when I was growing up, I can recall there being massive cypress trees and then they bulldozed them down and a fence would have been put up, assuming back in the same place as where the trees were or there was an old fence line.
“To me, this is a historic oopsie or error where the fence line just doesn’t match up with what the surveyed title probably is.
“This has been rectified and I’m glad we get to deal with it through Local Government rather than through the State Government because that can be quite a lengthy and quite a head spinning process to go through.”
Councillor Geraldine Conheady seconded the motion and agreed with Cr Beard.
“It’s the obvious thing that needs to be done and it’s not going to impact negatively on the road reserve anyway for it to be transferred across to the Crown,” she said.
