CAMPERDOWN’S Ron Cameron added another singles championship to his belt last Saturday but it was not without a challenge.

Cameron went toe-to-toe with Barry Atchison in the final of the club’s singles championships, with a solitary shot separating the division one pennant regulars.

Atchison progressed to the final after defeating Luke Wright 25-18, while Cameron beat Ray O’Neill 27-13 to move on.

Cameron eventually got the nod over Atchison 25-24, with the win his second at Camperdown, and seventh overall.

The left armer had previously won five titles at Camperdown Golf and he said he was thrilled to once again be crowned champion.

“It’s very pleasing because its 29 years since I won my first one at Camperdown Golf in the 1991 season,” he said.

“I’m happy to have won multiple at both clubs because the competition (at Camperdown) is pretty strong now and it always has been at Golf.

“It’s not an easy feat either, you think it might be but it’s certainly not.”

Little separated the pair throughout the contest, with both players producing timely shots at crucial moments of the match.

With neither prepared to give away an inch, it was fitting the match was decided on thelast end.

“We were tied at least three times throughout and Atch picked up two on the second last end to level it at 24 all,” Cameron said.

“On the last end he was holding game with a shot about a couple of feet away and I had a bit of a look and thought I would take him on.

“I was lucky enough I did and I got up and won the game.”

Cameron said he was pleased to overcome Atchison, but admitted he expected the contest to be a tight tussle.

“I knew he was in very good form because he’d been practicing a lot and he had been playing in the division events which he doesn’t normally do,” he said.

“He had a good lead-in to the singles championships and he was very consistent onthe day.

“He’s known down there for his consistency and I expected it to be tight. I tried to get a bit of a break on him but the only time I got a good lead was when we were 14 and I picked up five on him but within three ends he’d caught up again.

“The game was played in good spirits – we’ve been friends for a long time which makes it a bit different. You’re out there to win but at the end of the day you’re still mates.”

Cameron will progress onto the region finals next year but is already preparing for the upcoming pennant season.

Camperdown is set to face Apollo Bay at Apollo Bay on January 16 and is likely to do so with a new look outfit.

“A lot of us are missing pennant and are pretty excited to get back into it,” Cameron said.

“We’ll be without a few regulars but we’re looking for a few depth players to step up.

“We play Apollo Bay at Apollo Bay in the first game which will be a tough down there especially on their carpet.

“It’s not an easy carpet to play on but we’ll be competitive, that’s for sure.”
