The annual $30,000 Salt Creek Scholarship is now open and available for students from the south west who are planning to start university in 2026.

The Salt Creek Scholarship was first opened in 2019 when Salt Creek Merino Stud owner Peter Coy, whose land the wind farm is situated on, offered $15,000 each year to support students in pursuing their ambitions of obtaining a degree.

Mr Coy, having watched his daughters travel to Melbourne for study, felt rural students were at a distinct disadvantage and wanted to create a scholarship which would support students in covering their accommodation expenses.

Salt Creek Wind Farm developer Tilt Renewables also jumped on board, offering to match the funding.

“In recognition of the importance of education in our local community, Salt Creek Wind Farm established this scholarship to help a deserving local student who can illustrate how the support will benefit them,” Salt Creek Merino Stud director and communications manager Claudia Nance said.

“The scholarship aims to make tertiary education more accessible for students who might otherwise struggle with the costs of living away from home and supporting themselves near their place of study.”

Ms Nance said the recipient of the scholarship would be determined based on personal qualities, demonstrated leadership and academic ability.

“Applications are now open and close at 5pm on Wednesday, December 31,” she said.

“Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed via Zoom between January 5-9, and the successful recipient will be announced on January 19.

“The scholarship is open to students who live in or attend school in the south west and are Australian or New Zealand citizens or permanent residents.

“Applicants must be first-time tertiary students who have completed their final school year within the past five years and have received a university offer and proof of accommodation by January 16.”

Students can apply online at saltcreekscholarship.com.au by submitting a short personal statement and a reference from a teacher or community member.

The successful scholar will also share updates on their studies and career journey to inspire future applicants.
