SIMPSON enjoyed their second win of the season to take top spot on the ladder before the Easter Break when they defeated Western Eagles at home on the weekend.
After a competitive first quarter the Tigers kicked away in the second, outscoring their opponents 11 goals to three to go into the half-time break with a 26-14 lead.
While the Eagles had periods of resurgence through the second half, the Tigers kept battling, earning themselves a 48-29 victory to become league leaders ahead of Irrewarra-Beeac, who also have two wins.
Co-coach Jesse Harding said her while the win might have looked easy on paper her team had to slog it out all day to get the win.
“It was good to get the win, Western Eagles are a good young team, and it definitely wasn’t easy,” she said.
“A win’s positive, but we need to focus on what we need to work on and go from there.”
Harding said while the whole side was happy with the games they’d played so far the team had been struck with injuries and lack of availability, and would look forward to having all players available.
“We’ve had a good start, but we’ve had a few injuries so we haven’t had a full side yet,”
she said.
“Ash Arnold was out week one with an injury and came back this week, but then Hayley Coulson and Sophie Cronin were out.
“That’s probably the most exciting thing, because we’re still waiting on a few people to come in.”
Harding said while the side have missed a few players thus far, the return of Hayley Pouw to the side was a big boost for the Tigers.
“Hayley’s returned this year, which is great,” she said.
“She’s had six or seven years away from the club, and she was the stand-out on the weekend.
“The usuals, Kelly (Thompson), Paige (Salmon), they all played great, but Hayley was my stand-out for the day.”
Pouw and Salmon were named in the best for Simpson, as was Harding herself with 26 goals.
After Easter the Tigers host Birregurra, and Harding said she was hopeful that a full squad could take the game to the next level.
“Hopefully we can do that, I imagine they’re a pretty strong side still, so it’ll be tough,”
she said.
“But hopefully we can focus on what we can control and do well, that’s all we’re
looking at.”
In other games around the league, Alvie and South Colac drew, Apollo Bay beat Otway Districts, Birregurra won convincingly against Colac Imperials, and Irrewarra-Beeac were victorious in Lorne.
