HAMISH Sinnott will take the next step in his football career today.

The Camperdown local will line-up for Vic Country’s under 19 side in a challenge match against arch-rivals Vic Metro at Windy Hill.

He becomes the second Camperdown footballer in the space of two seasons to represent Vic Country, with Toby Mahony previously earning selection in 2019.

The 17 year-old, who has been plying his trade at NAB League level with Greater Western Victoria Rebels, said he was looking forward to donning the Big V.

“It’s pretty exciting obviously to get selected in these teams,” Sinnott said.

“It’ll be a very good experience and one I enjoy. I’ll be very nervous in the lead-up, but as soon as I’m out there it will be just another game.

“Vic Country has obviously been the top level I’ve wanted to get to once I made the Rebels.

“Being selected is the first step to getting drafted, so if you play well there then you have a pretty good chance to get looked at.”

Sinnott is expecting the contest to be one of the most intense games he will have played in.

While he is accustomed to playing senior football having debuted at 15 and at NAB League level, national games are unchartered the territory for the utility.

“It will be the quickest game I’ve ever played in,” Sinnott said.

“The pressure will be up but hopefully I can bring my A-game.

“It’ll be very quick but I’ll just take the game (as it comes) and see how I go.”

The Vic Country side includes nine Rebels footballers, with the remaining 15 players coming from the Bendigo Pioneers, Dandenong Stingrays, Geelong Falcons, Gippsland Power and Murray Bushrangers.

Sinnott said it was reassuring to have familiar faces beside him, while he added it was also a good experience to play with new players.

“I’ve been playing with those nine guys for the last four years so I’ve played a lot of footy with them,” he said.

“That’s been good because we know each other’s games pretty well.

“Playing footy with different people is good too. When you play with new people you get to know more stuff (about footy).

“There’s about 15 other boys I haven’t played with which will be good and exciting.”

As for his opposition, the Mercy Regional College student knows Vic Metro poses as a big threat.

“Vic Metro will be skillful. They don’t miss many targets and they’ll be very tall,” Sinnott said.

“They’ve got some class there with Nick Daicos, Sinnon and Somsy and them type of players.”

Sinnott has enjoyed returning to football in season 2021 after playing just once last year because of COVID-19.

This season has also had its COVID challenges and while that’s proven tough to manage at times, Sinnott considers himself lucky to be playing footy week-in, week-out.

“It’s been very different but I think we’ve actually been lucky because so far we’ve only missed one game being a country team,” he said.

“The change in the fixture has been hard, we’re not really finding out until half a week before the games what we’re actually doing and that.

“It’s been alright though. You don’t have to think about it much until Thursday night which isn’t too bad.

“My form’s been pretty good recently. I started the year pretty slow, but the last month or two I’ve started to find my stride.”

Today’s Vic Country-Vic Metro match starts at 12noon.
