Slow start from Magpies

THE road trip to Melville Oval ended in a 16-point loss for Camperdown’s senior footballers last weekend.

“They (Hamilton) deserved their win,” Camperdown coach Clinton Thomas said of the Kangaroos’ 10.14.74 to 8.10.58 victory.

“Full credit to Hamilton, they played their stoppage-based game on the smaller Melville Oval well,” he said.

The home team led by seven points at the first change and Thomas was not overly happy with the Magpies’ start.

“We were lucky not to be further behind at quarter time,” he recalled.

“We didn’t play our contested brand, there was perceived pressure rather than actual pressure at times.”

Hamilton kicked away with five goals to one in the second term.

“In the second quarter Hamilton really made the most of their opportunities and got away from us.”

The Magpies outscored Hamilton in the second half, five goals to two.

“We were much more competitive in the second half, we got our game going a bit better.

“But we just can’t afford to concede a start to any team in this competition.”

Thomas said it was hard to find four quarter contributors.

“Aidan Conheady was our best, he’s elusive and damaging when he gets it.

“Billy Arnold was solid, Josh Place and Charlie Lucas played decent games.”

Conheady was the Magpies only multiple goal kicker with two.

Camperdown has a week off for the interleague bye this week, and will resume on July 12 with a home game against Port Fairy at the Leura Oval.

Hamilton also took out the reserves match with a 14.10.94 to 5.7.37 win.

Best for Camperdown were Luke Ball, Jack Smith and Dale McDowell.

Ball, Tim Fitzgerald, Xavier O’Connor, Rory Swayn and junior player Paddy Hassett all kicked a goal each.

Hassett and father Mick, the Camperdown reserves coach, played football together for the first time.

Camperdown unfortunately had to forfeit the under 18 game.

Hamilton had a 39-point win in the under 16s, 12.9.81 to 6.6.42.

Best for Camperdown were Paddy Hassett, Archie McDonald and Rory Cameron, Hassett and Cameron kicking three goals each.

Hamilton also got the win in the under 14 game, 9.4.58 to 3.3.21.

Alex Huggins, Jimmy Cheeseman and Harry Sinnott were best for Camperdown, with goals coming from Bailey Carman, Darby Sinnott and Charlie Unwin.

Hamilton took the points in the under 12s, 4.11.35 to 3.4.22.

Lewie West, Ned Pyle and Jay Finlayson were best for the junior Magpies, with Pyle, Roy Molan and Hamish Christensen kicking a goal each.

In the Open netball, Camperdown registered a convincing 63-37 win.

The Magpies won each quarter, the win a pleasing one for coach Jill Leader.

“We got the scoreboard rolling early then put together four very consistent quarters,” Leader said.

Teenage star Piper Stephens top scored with 32 goals and was named best on court.

“Piper was outstanding Saturday, it was probably her best game in Open netball.

“She was superb for all four quarters and grows as a player by the week.”

Goal keeper Annaliese Hughes and goal defence Rosie Pickles were also in Camperdown’s best.

“Annaliese was amazing, got plenty of loose balls and a huge amount of rebounds.

“Rosie connected our defence to our attack really well and she had a heap of intercepts.”

Leader also liked the game of defender Elsie Sinnott.

“Elsie was outstanding in wing defence, she is amazing in her defensive game as a 16 year-old.”

Leader said her team would enjoy the full week off before resuming against Port Fairy on July 12.

The division one netball saw Hamilton score a 45-32 win.

Chloe O’Brien, Isobel Sinnott and Jessica Cameron were Camperdown’s best, with Kiara Love scoring 21 goals and Isobel Sinnott 11.
