Special milestone for McCann
STAR Cobden defender Remeny McCann will line up for her 200th open netball game for the club against Port Fairy this weekend.
Debuting at open level in 2011 at the age of 15, McCann has won multiple club best and fairest awards, an Ellen Darcy MVP and a Dot Jenkins Medallist as league best and fairest in 2022.
McCann has also represented the league many times and has had multiple team of the year selections.
Off court, McCann has served as a volunteer in umpire and umpire coordinator roles, as well as a junior coach.
“It’s an amazing effort, over the past 15 years, especially as she hasn’t always lived in Cobden, she travelled from Ballarat when she was at university, and now lives in Wallacedale, nearly two hours from Cobden,” Cobden co-coach Nadine McNamara said.
“So not only is it an amazing milestone to achieve living in the community, but the commitment she’s showing to our club to travel and continue to play for us over that time is very admirable.”
McNamara was glowing in her praise of McCann’s on-court ability.
“Rem has got incredible athleticism, and her ability to read the play is something that stands out.
“She’s often intercepting some of the most difficult balls that we sit back and watch in awe, we just don’t know how she does it.”
The Cobden co-coach said it’s been great to see McCann develop not only as a player, but also as a person at Cobden in the past 15 years.
“She’s been an invaluable volunteer, she’s been an umpire, an umpire coordinator, and she’s also coached a lot of junior teams.
“So as much as it’s an amazing feat for her on court, I think for us as a club to reflect on her contribution over the past 15 years outside of the court is really special as well.”
McCann is set to be just the fourth Cobden player to reach the 200 game milestone in the top grade, joining Ange Kelly, Janine Hutt, and the most recent in Kerry McGlade who reached the mark in 2008.
“We’re amazingly proud of Rem and really excited to see her play on the weekend.
“Former Cobden player Molly Hutt is obviously playing for Port Fairy, so it’ll be nice to have Molly there as well, Molly would’ve played a lot of those senior games with Rem, so that’ll be pretty special.”
McCann said the magnitude of her achievement was not lost on her.
“The travel has been a bit of a slog but totally worth it. You only start to realise the significance of these things when you’re a bit older.”
McCann is thrilled to join Kelly, Hutt and McGlade in the exclusive club.
“It’s an absolute massive honour to join that group, I was a little girl watching them achieve their milestones and playing well so to be in that company means a lot.”
Apart from a season at Terang Mortlake and a season at Skipton while at university, McCann has stayed loyal to the Bombers.
“Mum and Dad are there, the same volunteers from when I was a kid are still around, the club is a second family to me and an incredible community to be involved in.”
McCann thanked her father, Cobden life member Russell, for his support over the years.
“Full credit to my dad for this milestone, he’s driven home how important these things are and kept me going when I might have stopped.
“Playing sport is one of the simple pleasures in life and he’s always stressed that.”
Playing former longtime teammate Molly Hutt is a nice touch for McCann in her milestone game.
“Port Fairy isn’t too far from where I am at Wallacedale so it’s almost like a home game.
“It will be fun to line up against Molly as well as having family and friends there.”
