The Camperdown service will see a dawn service at the Soldier’s Memorial at the intersection of Little Manifold and Cressy Streets from 6am on Saturday, April 25.

The service will be followed by a gunfire breakfast.

Camperdown Returned and Services League (RSL) sub-branch president Paul Marsland said this year’s services will mark the 75th anniversary of the introduction of Australia’s National Service Scheme which ran from1951 to 1972.

“Australia’s National Service Scheme, introduced in 1951 saw a stark change in practice with regard to defence force recruitment across all three services enlisting 280,000 seamen, soldiers and airmen as conscripts who were commonly referred to as ‘Nashos’,” he said.

“Many of the current veteran membership of the Camperdown RSL sub-branch proudly served under this scheme.

“I encourage all in the community to attend the Anzac Day services remembering family members who have served with Australia’s or allied defence forces.

“Medals are encouraged to be worn by community members in recognition of family members who have served and passed.

“Their service is important and worthy of ongoing recognition.”

The morning service will begin with a march from the intersection of Little Manifold and Pike Streets at 9.45am to begin proceedings at 10am.

Schools, community groups, first responders, emergency services and individuals are encouraged to join the march which will be led by Parade Commander WO1 Ret. Don McInnes and the Lakes and Craters Band.

Mr Marsland said this year’s guest speaker was Dr John Menzies OAM.

“Many will be unaware of Dr. Menzies’ military service with the Royal Australian Navy in the 1970’s, which is reflected by many proud veterans who quietly live amongst us having given much in the service in defence of our country,” he said.

“After the midmorning service, all in attendance are invited to join the RSL sub-branch members and veterans for a morning tea and refreshments at the RSL Hall at 14 Pike Street.”

The Anzac Day service for the Derrinallum and Lismore communities will be held in Derrinallum’s cenotaph in Main Street.

Residents are encouraged to arrive by 10.40am for a 10.45am start, with morning tea to be served following the service at the Derrinallum Lismore History Rooms at 46 Main Street.
