State title for golfers
LOCAL golfers Loretta Roberts and Melissa Hammond have taken out this year’s Doris Chambers State Final 2.

LOCAL golfers Loretta Roberts and Melissa Hammond have taken out this year’s Doris Chambers State Final 2.
Roberts and Hammond, who are both members of the Peterborough Golf club, won the event at Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club last Thursday.
They finished with an incredible score of 32 stableford points, and were closely followed by runners-up Fiona Watach and Jean McGonigal from Queens Park Golf Club with 31 points.
“We have both played in this competition before, with other partners but this was the first time we played together,” Melissa said.
“We were thrilled to win, and very surprised – it was probably the first time we were both speechless.”
Melissa said while 32 points was “not a bad score” she thought on the day 36 might have won it.
“Being so wet on the day it probably eliminated some players,” she said.
“It’s a totally different game in those conditions and it probably suits a bigger hitter.”
Players faced drizzly conditions for the first nine holes.
Starting on the 10th, which was longer than the front nine, the pair played well on the big par fives.
“Then the rain hit the second nine and we had to go up with our sticks because of the rain and the wet course. When we hit the par threes we landed on the green on all of them but struggled getting distance with the par fives.
“We got into a big bunker but somehow got out of the water and had a penalty.”
Melissa and Loretta’s win was the second at the event for the Peterborough Golf Club.
“It’s a huge achievement for the club (having its members take victory twice),” Melissa said.
“We’re very proud.”
Also performing well at the state event was S. Neumann and E. Cameron from Lake Bolac Golf Club who finished in sixth place with 28 points.
Timboon Golf Club’s M. Clements and H. Finlayson finished in 13th on 23 points.
